About
NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Went in the Best of Both Worlds Tour. Awesome experience with a very knowledgable guide - we had Sam. Very funny stories and great hands on experiences with the garden. Also received cool tips about where to visit. I would come here again.

Lush gardens and unique history
Oct. 2021
If you like the late afternoon light the garden portion of this tour is rich in color and contrasts. We had an excellent extroverted guide who knew the flora as well as the history of the Allerton legacy. Being able to tour the house and place ourselves back in time lent a contrast to the mission of the gardens. The provided dinner was just right as the evening descended on the tour. It's not a strenuous experience, almost all on level grounds. We had enough time to roam the estate grounds before we jumped onto electric carts to make our way back to the bus. A well planned tour.

Best of Both Worlds Tour-both gardens
Oct. 2021
Seeing the waterfall was amazing AND discovering what this nonprofit is all about was wonderful! Preserving endangered tropical plants with an eye to saving people, too! The research about food sources, medicinal uses, and the canoe garden showing the plants the Polynesian people brought with them. Also, who knew most of those plants could tolerate sea water? Not me! Then the beautiful "rooms" in the Allerton gardens and the story of the family and the two men who created these spaces was inspiring. Kauai is obviously a place where someone can have a small home and do most of ones entertaining in beautiful outdoor spaces.

Sam is a great guide
Sep. 2021 • Couples
We booked the “best of both worlds” tour and had Sam as our tour guide. This tour took us through major parts of the 2 major gardens: McBryde and Allerton. You take a bus to various spots on the huge property and get out to walk and tour different parts of the garden. Sam has a long family history with the garden and is extremely knowledgeable about the plants and history of the gardens since he was raised there and been there most of his life. We spend over 2 hours listening to details of the gardens and plants and Sam is very interesting.
There is a nice sized gift shop, some snacks and drinks, a place to sit outside in the shade, nice restrooms. The bus was nice, clean and has Air conditioning.
You are supposed to and it’s required to wear closed toe and heel shoes, which we did but several people had Tevas which I purposefully did not wear.
We would definitely recommend this botanical gardens.

Perfect day in paradise! We spent a lovely 2.5hrs with Paul learning about some very cool and rare plants. The scenery down into the gardens was jaw-droppingly beautiful. The highlight for us was the Allerton Gardens on the Best of Both Worlds tour. The orchids and flowers were so very cool and photo-worthy.

Would highly recommend!

Book the Allerton Sunset Tour!
Sep. 2021 • Family
My family had a really enjoyable time taking Ron’s Allerton sunset tour. The food was really good and you can sit anywhere around Allerton’s house. You can even go to the beach there too.
Ron is so knowledgeable and fun, and my teenage sons were really into the tour too cause he kept it engaging. I highly recommend it! I have gone in 2018 for just the Allerton Garden tour but it was worth the extra bucks to take the sunset tour. Bonus was all you can eat starfruit before the tour departed cause they had so many to be picked, they were giving them away! Yummy!

Beautiful experience!

We did the Best of Both Worlds Tour of highlights of both the Allerton Gardens and McBride Gardens. Our tour guide, Sam, was awesome and an excellent photographer! The tour is partly on a bus and partly walking in certain areas. It rains regularly throughout the area, so they are always stocked with clear umbrellas for everyone so you can still enjoy the walking portions of the tour even if there’s a slight drizzle. We enjoyed the slight rain as we walked! It was so refreshing and beautiful!!! It was wonderful to see the gardens in all their lush beauty including a secluded little waterfall and the giant fig trees that were used in the Jurassic Park films. And Sam made it entertaining the entire way through!

More garden, less tour guide jokes
Aug. 2021
Beautiful park with gorgeous landscapes. But an underwhelming tour. Three areas of feedback:
1) For $60 pp, we should be able to spend more time in the gardens. The walking tour felt fairly leashed, and rushed. We were hurried along and not really given adequate time to explore, which is why one visits Botanical Gardens. Also less driving and more walking!
2) Less tour guide jokes, more information about the plantings. I left knowing more about the tour guide than about the plants! He mentioned he didn't want it to feel like a classroom, but please give more education about the trees, flowers, fruits, etc.
3) We both remarked on how "in the closet" this tour is about Allerton's sexuality. It is ridiculous in 2021 to continue the narrative they were just friends. In general, we felt an oddly obsolete framing of these two mens' lives and how they spent their time.

Gorgeous Spot!
Aug. 2021
What an amazing and unforgettable experience! I had already done the 3 hour tour of the gardens but got to see a bit more of the gardens on this tour. Dinner was delicious, and the spot just breathtaking. Our guide Sam made it all super fun and he is also so knowledgeable. Highly recommend this tour to anyone that loves the gardens and also wants to see the fire dancers. One of the highlights of my trip to Kauai for sure!!!!!!!
