NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Our entire group of 8 people ranging in age from 10 to 75 enjoyed this tour. The garden is exquisite and our tour guide was informative and entertaining. Well worth the entry fee.

Entry fee is $50 USD per adult. Buy a tropical flower guide and go for a walk - money better spent. High entry fee is because these gardens do not receive any government funding.

This might sound like a strange way to spend a few hours, but is totally worth it. The amount of plant species and plant preservation is truly inspiring. It's great to see so much wonderful work going on in this part of the world for conservation and education. We did the self guided tour and enjoyed it very much. I'm... More

My family (from toddler to teenager, and adults) loved walking around these gardens and seeing the bizarre and huge roots of ficus trees featured in the movie Jurassic Park. We had a special chance to go in the evening and smell flowers that bloom at sundown, but I expect a regular tour would be delightful too. We certainly saw only... More

Very informative guided tour of two beautiful botanical gardens on the coast north of Poipu Beach. Guide was very knowledgeable, humorous and responsive to guest taking the tour. Tour lasts 2 1/2 hours but goes very quickly as there is so much to see and experience. Highly recommend this tour.

This is one of the many beautiful tours well-worth taking on the island. Walking through the gardens in the valley is so peaceful and gorgeous. The amount of love and care taken to plan and build the garden is astounding. Going on the dinner tour was time well spent and I would love to go again. The guide was very... More

The gardens are so beautiful, and everyone employee we met there was so pleasant. I recommend taking a guided tour. Our guide, David, was so informative. We even got to taste the fruit that was ripe on some of the trees in the garden during our visit.

The Allerton Gardens guided tour is a must! The ride to the gardens takes about 10 minutes (they provide the transportation) and the driver gives you interesting information along the way. Once at the botanical gardens, another tour guide shows you and explains to you the history, architecture, and the flora. This is a must-do. Even our two teenage daughters... More

We had a well experienced guide through the garden. She went into great detail telling us about each area and how it was developed. There was some significance for each room in the garden. The walk was just the right length to be enjoyable, and keep my interest. I will definitely go again next time I'm in Kauai.
