Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The National Park Service has built a new overlook with informational placards, ample parking with room to turn around, and restrooms with stunning views of the taro fields below. It is easier to pull out if you are heading southbound. Check opening times- it wasn't open every day, and only until three PM on the days we visited shortly after it opened.

This refuge is being farmed for taro, as it provides a wetland for waterfowl. We saw nene, H. stilt, the Hawaiian duck, red headed moorhen, black crowned night heron and golden plover, to name just a few. There are several spots where birders have pulled over to view birds. It's a single lane paved road, so there isn't much room. I"ve been birding for years and know it's not polite to block road traffic. So I pulled over next to the gate to let my photographer husband out because it got me off the road completely.
Within seconds a little Japanese man came flying over in a golf cart, shaking his finger at me and spitting mad, saying "no parking, go away, no parking". Fine, I wasn't parked, as my engine was still running."You can't stay here, you have to be on the other side of the bridge." There are no birds on the 'other side of the bridge" just a narrow two lane road with lots of traffic and NO PLACE TO PARK.
So I pulled up the road to a spot where it was obvious that others had parked, where I could easily block any sort of traffic coming from either direction. I didn't fly over 3000 miles just to have a cranky man shoo me away from 'his' federally funded, USFW managed, US Government supplied equipment, seeded and subsidized taro field.

This place was beautiful. We took multiple pictures and enjoyed watching the birds. The giftshop was great also!

I arrived 20 minutes prior to closing and was still required to pay $10 to visit. The scenery is beautiful, a lot of birds nesting, geese and the lighthouse (already closed.) make sure you arrive early so you have lots of time to walk around and visit everything.

The area was badly damaged during the recent Hurricane that hit the islands, but is making a great comeback. The taro fields have been replanted and there have been a lot of birds return to the area. Take your time and take a slow drive through the area.

We enjoy this slow and peaceful drive through the taro fields. You get a closer look at the stilts, mud hens, hawaiian ducks, nene', coots, and plovers. This year we were rewarded with a long look at a Tundra swan who had wandered into the area. Further down the road, we found some monarch butterflies who were enjoying the afternoon amongst some introduced milkweed.

I was excited to find this little area for birdwatching in Hanalei. Worth a drive or two. No real birding sites beyond the taro fields so don't really recommend going all the way to dead end. Note that locals use this road in and out of their homes so be respectful on the single lane road.

But not much else. Pretty empty not to scare the birds away. Mostly waterfowl; like cattle egrets, coots (or muddhens) and ducks. Once saw a black Hawaiian duck here and always a lot of cinnamon mannekins. I think they are attracted by the irrigation canals new or old? Lots of standing water so lots of mosquitos. Errant parking but no one is there.

Very quiet and peaceful place to visit. Out of the way with lots of wildlife. Bring your big repellent! Worth the visit and stroll.

I am sure this is a nice place by boat, but don't try to drive there. The map takes you to a dead end full of biting bugs.

Is the Refuge open after the April floods? Are the roads and bridges cleared and open?
