Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Marcy was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and process of developing orchids. She helped us understand which orchids were best for our property on the Big Island. The shop is also a garden showroom. You can even have an orchid named after you (for $1000). They develop about 10 new varieties a year.

I used to grow orchids in my home. One too many moves stopped my ability to keep them going.
We more love in Florida in the best climate for some of them.
They have an amazing staff. They want to help educate everyone who comes through there door.
While I bought nothing in this trip, I will be ordering in the coming months.
A must stop if you love flowers...
And.. There is a great good truck outside. But your lunch or snack and enjoy it inside the orchid gallery. They have a lovely setting for you to enjoy.
Thanks Geneva for the next chapter in my orchid education.

During the past couple years, we've stopped at Akatsuka Orchid Gardens on our way back from the Volcano National Park. They have a wonderful self-guided educational tour about orchids. The variety and beauty is amazing. Mary is terrific and I highly recommend the stop.

At this store, you can see, learn, buy and get a history lesson about orchids and everything associated with them. The Akatsuka’s have
“invented” many new varieties of orchids. So beautiful, wish we could take some home . There is no charge to enter store and there is a large parking lot. Tuk Tuk Thai food truck is located in this parking lot.

Nice short stop about halfway between Hilo and Volcanoes NP. If you have any interest in gardening or botany in general, this is a MUST SEE. The orchids are perfect, absolutely amazing. Nice gift shop too.

This was once a large beautiful orchid store that you could freely browse, giving you the option to look at and buy gorgeous orchids and other tropical plants.
Now they cut down the size of the store by 2/3rd and charge you $5/person to look around. Worse, they market it as an "orchid maze", which is actually no maze at all. Instead, it's a few tables of orchids you simply walk around.
I wish I could get my money back.

This was one of the excursions that my husband and I choose to do while we were in Hilo, as I love Orchids. I found there were a lot of varieties that I haven't seen before, like the Chocolate Orchid that actually smells like chocolate. Very nice overall!

Not being particularly a lover of plants and flowers, I was very hesitant to stop at the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. My wife convinced me to stop there. Besides it was raining and we had no other place to go. Having said that, I was quite pleased with the experience. I was fascinated by the wide variety of very beautiful orchids. I took the opportunity to take dozens of close-ups of gorgeous specimens. Even then I did not get every one. There is no entrance fee and you can purchase from a large selection. We were told they even ship to Canada. No question you will enjoy this attraction.

Gorgeous orchids of all colors and varieties. The prized $20,000 orchid is blooming right now (see pic). If we didn’t live in the desert, I’d try my hand with some of these beauties. Loved the chocolate smelling orchid. This place is certainly worth a stop!

I can't seem to figure out whether the only way to shop in store is to purchase a tour. Anyone go there NOT with a tour?
Written 19 June 2019
No tour is needed. Merely go in and enjoy walking around the stunning orchids and displays.
