Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We've done a lot of road trips and seem to find some of the most out of the way places to go to like the most Eastern point in the United States so why not go to the most Southern point of the US as well. So this odd drive down to the bottom of the Big Island is one of those places you go to say you went. It's rugged and remote and the wind blows so hard you have to really hold on to keep your balance but all the reviews I read said the locals go here to jump off the cliff and swim but they don't recommend it. They climb back up a rugged ladder to get back to the top. I'm afraid of heights so getting this picture was pretty great for me. It looked beautiful if you are brave to do it. No one was jumping when we were there only a few guys fishing. It's too bad that someone vandalized this sign just before you turn off to view the cliff.

This rugged point of land is the southernmost point of land in the 50 United States. It is believed to be the place the first Polynesians came ashore when they reached the islands.
This entire area is a National Historic Landmark and dotted with ruins of heiau and cultural relics.
When you see the lighthouse, South Point is just beyond.
When we visited it was very windy with a lot of local fisherman.
To access this area it is about 11 miles off the main highway over a very narrow road. Please drive with Aloha on the one lane sections.

Our visit to the southernmost point in the entire US is here. It takes a good drive off the Mamalahoa Hwy/Hawaiia Belt Rd to get there and a good section of this South Point Rd is not wide enough for 2 cars to pass so be prepared to move over as much as you can when another vehicle comes from the opposite direction. The drive down is mostly devoid of any buildings and pretty flat. We found the South Point area worth the drive off the highway but that may depend on how much time you have plus we were traversing anyway from Volcano to Kailua-Kona. You are situated on cliffs above the ocean. It is a beautiful view in all directions. We did not witness anybody jumping into the waters below. We also did not walk further south to the Helau. Of note is that there is a formation underwater just off the southern point that will someday become the new most southern point in the US but it will not be in our lifetime. Be careful if it is a windy day. Also be aware that there are some "holes" that you can look down into and see the water. Some brave people will even hike down into the holes and sit there. To us this excursion was worth doing.

So glad we finally made it down there! If we were in the right spot which I am sure we were, we were literally the 4 southernmost people in the entire country! I was shocked at how few people were actually there. A handful of fishermen and other sightseers but very easy to access and be alone. Windy but absolutely beautiful and a spot that is tough to beat! Loved it! Also would've loved to do the cliff jump but just not in the time budget for the day.

Unique due to it being the southern most point in U.S. A bit of a drive from either Kona or Hilo, but well worth the visit. From the main road to South Point you pass through grassy fields, cows and very few trees. The wind seems to blow constantly, mind you not a breeze either. On the western side of this point you will be greeted with fairly tall rock cliffs and beautiful turquoise water. Several activities occur here of note 1. Cliff jumping 2. Fishing 3. Kayaking and SUP. Porta-Pottys are available. No other services.

South Point is a bit out of the way when driving around the island but worth a stop. It's down a narrow, not well maintained road. Once you reach the end of the road, you have to walk a ways past the light beacon and down to a low wall to reach the actual southernmost point. Unlike Key West there is no sign and no crowds. Not much to do around but it is cool to say you there. According to the guidebook historians think this is where the first people arrived to the islands.

This was a short stop for us on our way to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We had to see the southernmost point in the USA. It was cloudy when we went but the views of the cliffs were beautiful. We saw some people jumping from the diving platforms. The ocean was extremely rough. We also saw a sea turtle swimming down below in the open water.

We went on a rainy day, but it was still impressive! Brave Fisher folks we’re casting lines off the cliff, clad in macs. Walking over to the true south point, the waves crashed violently and soaked us through. Pretty amazing spot!

Made a stop for the views and so that my son can get a cliff dive in. No problem parking along the street. Enjoyed the views, pristine water, and watching people fish. It was very windy. And now I can say I was in the southern most part of the United States.

Had to go here since you can't get further south than this place in the US. High cliffs and while we were there some one took a jump off into the ocean. about a 30 foot drop but they have ladders to let you climb back up. the View is great so it is a must do.
