The cabins need a refresher, but they do have small mattresses on the bunks, electricity, plenty of hot water, and a large shared kitchen. You might want to think about a small heater, or plenty of cover, as at that altitude, it gets chilly at...More

Just your run of the mill state park, has cabins with no linens for rent. Has some nice vegetation to take pictures of or just look at. Entrance is up a long winding road

This is a great stop along the Hamakua Coast. Access is via a rather windy, but well-marked, paved road with some great ocean views along the way. The parking area is paved, and some of the trails are well developed. The location has a covered...More

We followed the signs off the main highway to take a walk. The nature trail was well-marked and easy to navigate thanks to the white markings on the trees. It was a pleasant hike. The grounds and cabins look well=maintained.

Tent Camped over the weekend here. It's a dark little Meadow with tall trees a couple of miles up a windy road. There are three shelters over a concrete platform in which to pitch your tent. Can't stake your tent down but being out of...More

This State Park is about 3 miles up a narrow windy road from Hwy 19. It is nicely maintained and quiet - we saw just two other couples. There is a nice Polynesian Garden and a nature trail through old growth woodland. The trail is...More

I like this place. I wouldn't go there if I only had 3 days on BI but I would go if I had 10. Just regarding the review from April 2017 that said there are no numbers on the nature trail.... There most certainly are...More

Easy accessibility. Drive to a small parking lot, exit the car, you're in the forest. This heavy, vegetated area provides much of the sources for costumes and ornaments for Hawai'ian events, parties and funerals. Tradition dictates that the leaves, ferns, roots taken for the events...More

Really pretty native forest with easy flat trail and we only saw 1 other couple. Great guidebook but if anything too much information. Great stop for an hour. Cabins looked cool too.

The native trees nature trail is probably very good but... there is a trail guide giving you lots of interesting facts about trees at numbered points on the trail. But there are no numbers on the trail itself. Then it started raining (which is not...More

Have to admit that we did not have great expectations of this small park. One has to travel 3 miles off of the road through a residential area to get there. However, it is a beautiful place with needlepoint plans and an old Hawaiian forest....More

We drove up to this park on a whim, and were very pleasantly surprised. It is high enough in elevation to be noticeably cooler than the ocean-side. It was founded by a group of people that wanted to preserve some of the native forest from...More
