There is some great snorkeling on the Hilo side of the Big Island. The entry is excellent and the fish are amazing, even saw many types of eels. There were turtles as well. The beach part is great for kids (we had a 7 and 3 year old with us). There is a life guard present for added assurance. A... More

This is close to Hilo, has shore access for snorkeling and a lifeguard presence. Many multicolored fish within 100 yards of shore. Beach isn't very large, so plan a long day in sand, there are benches for eating and some sitting benches. Clear day reveals Mauna Kea over the bay

As you can see from the picture, this is what it looks like as you walk up to it. There is not a sandy beach but well ground gravel and lava. Not bad at all and several areas to put down a blanket or chair. Surrounded by rocks further out to protect swimmers from possible dangerous waves. Easy to swim... More

Finding a parking spot can be a bit of a challenge on busy days, but in the park you will never feel very crowded. There are many options to lay down your towel or put of a beach chair - a small black sand beach with shade giving palm trees, grassy areas and further down rocky areas with some sand... More

Found this park off tripadvisor. One thing I notice in Hawaii that people will stop on the side of the road to get to the beach when they're other options and this is one of them. Unique because of the black sand. Sort of rocky. Nice rock formation to climb just don't do it in flip flops. A few trees... More

Richardson beach park is known for its black sand. Most of the time you are able to see green sea turtles also known as Honu.

Don't miss the spot not far from downtown Hilo. While we were there three sea turtles hauled out on the rocks and promptly went to sleep. I wouldn't have missed that for the world!

The park is large and well laid out. Lots of ponds with bridges. Only wish they had a playground for children, although our 2 year old loved going over the bridges. Great for walking your dogs or taking a stroll. Right in town. Was a bit cool with the rain and spay so you may want a light jacket. Huge... More

I enjoy snorkeling and so this beach has it all. Plenty of wildlife as in fish and turtles. There is some fresh water entering the sea and so it's not Kona, but a real hoot none the less.

Interesting to visit a black volcanic sand beach, sighted a couple of green turtles which was great. The beach is small than I had though and be aware that the rocks at low tide are very slippery.
