About
History doesn’t have a state line; the historical aspects of the west can be seen in the Crook County Museum &Art Gallery in picturesque Sundance, Wyoming right off of interstate 90. The History of Crook County is depicted in the many dioramas and exhibits, over 7000 artifacts. The original court room where the Sundance Kid had his trial is on display in one of our permanent exhibits along with a gun exhibit that is phenomenal. Experience a walk through time in the replica barn and stable with its buggy and work tools. Glance in the bunk house that has all the amenities a cowboy bachelor could want. Listen for the sounds of stampeding buffalo hooves as you look at the Vore Buffalo Jump diorama with all its grand archeology discoveries. Go on an adventure of a lifetime with Custer and his men as they trek through the Black Hills in the Expedition of 1874. Follow the trails and the tribulations of his men as they fight for survival against nature, the illicit miners, and the natives.

My favorite part of the visit was the overwhelming number of artifacts they have on display in the museum. It takes a a good two hours to run through the extensive array of memorabilia on display. The people who are running the Museum, from Rocky to Vicki, couldn't be more pleasant or enthusiastic about what they're doing.
I will definitely return. It's a great way to spend time and equally enjoyable being around such enthusiastic people who care about the heritage of the area.

we had just checked out of out motel and were exploring a little of Sundance.
The Cook County Museum (currently located under the Courthouse) has a lot to explore and discover.
With exhibits of daily life in the early years, memorabilia on the Sundance Kid, and a huge variety of antiques and other collectibles, it can easily kill an hour or more as you wander amongst the various displays.
Free entry (and elevator down from within the courthouse if reqd) makes for a must see spot in Sundance.

Yes, it's free and very, very interesting. The curator tells me they run three museums in Crook County on a budget of $230,000. It breaks my heart. Every time I run into a museum of this kind, I want to sit down and cry. A pile of history: real, authentic historical artifacts, illustrating times past-never-to-be-seen again. Items you cannot recreate:they either existed in the old times, or they did not. And they either survived or not. And yet, no money is coming into this museum. How long before they have to close? And we lose it all? I mean, these people here have the actual courtroom where The Sundance Kid was judged and sent to jail: the chairs, the desk, the flag, the documents. Once this is lost, where will we find it? By the way, Harry Alonzo Longabaugh spent 18 months in that city's jail for stealing from a local ranch and that's where he got his nickname. Joining Butch Cassidy and the Hole in the Wall gang came afterwards.
In any event, if you have any interest in history, this is A MUST place. And yes, it's free, but donations are highly needed and appreciated. We had a great visit and a long talk with the curator, Rocky, who proved to be friendly, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable.

Stopped in Sundance to break up our journey from Medora SD and after our visit to Devils Tower. This museum has so many interesting things to look at. The curator was really passionate about the collection. The best part was the Sundance Kid courtroom

This is a free historical museum that was packed with interesting items. They were in the process of moving to a larger facility which is needed but the displays were put together nicely and the curator was chockfull of infomration

We just happened upon this museum en route west. It turned out to be one of the highlights of a wonderful week. The knowlegable and friendly curator surely has a passion for this chock full and incredibly interesting museum. There really is something for everyone and every age.It is in the basement in an unassuming building and they are raising money to move to a better facility. I thought we'd just pop in for 10 mintues - but what a surprise. We were there about an hour and didn't get it all in. I was fascinated by the Buffalo Vore and there was a really interesting video about it. There were wonderful newspaper articles and clippings of the local villains, rascals and murderers. As assortment of weapons, a mercantile room, day to day household stuff, reassembled living quarters - it just went on! Folks have been wonderfully generous with family treasures and artifacts. We both learned a lot and my husband the history buff was over the moon. We really enjoyed our time. Absolutely terrific and well worth a visit. It is also free of charge (though I sincerely hope that folks put in a well deserved payment in the donation box.)

Sundance had one of the first nuclear power plants in the US. There is a cool article hear about a woman that had been scalped by Indians and lived. The manager of the museum is a wealth of information take a minute to ask him for his recommendations.

Last week, we stopped in Sundance to take a picture of the famed Sundance Kid statue and happened on this real neat museum full of memorabilia, dioramas, etc. on the same block. We spent over an hour here but could have stayed longer since everywhere you looked there was a lot of fascinating displays and a knowledgeable person who was happy to converse with you. This place is well worth your time and a visit and was one of the main highlights in our trip to the Black Hills, Cody, and Yellowstone. DON'T MISS IT!

Plan to spend a couple of hours looking at the displays and reading the history of the area. It is not a big place but is packed with so much history. Stop and learn about the Sundance Kid's history. This could be the place where he started his life of crime. The Museum is free, but leave a small vacation. I mean if you stopped at the Vore site and paid $15 a couple you can easily drop a few bucks here. Posted by grinandbrakeit.com

8:00am to 4pm weekdays. I'm not sure of the weekend hours. They do have a Facebook page and web site that may help.
