Finally I got an answer to why this random small town became a tourist trap, and it was largely because of Mr. Bennett's photography and promotion. It was quite an interesting exhibit and free this season.
Museum of Bennett's photo studio. Great piece of history regarding photography in the US and many of his pictures of Native Americans from this region.

This was free this year due to a grant they had received. Enjoyed learning about the history of the Dells, the local area and people.
Enjoyed the museum, surprisingly very interactive so it even kept my teenagers entertained. Beautiful pictures and glimpse of a bygone era. We bought a neat book in the gift area for $2 that showed Bennett's pictures of Dells landmarks along pics of those same landmarks...More
If you like history and you'd like to learn local history that might not be found in text books, then this is the place to visit.
Ran by the Wi. State Historical Society this is where the tourist business began for WI. Dells. You're able to look at some of the stereoscopes (pictures) that H.H. Bennet sold and started the tourist rush to WI. Dells.
