- DeniseGreen Bay, Wisconsin2,312 contributionsOne of the Best state parksI love this park! Just was doing a drive thru today to show some visitors the area. Not as much in winter as summer, of course. Still beautiful nature as we stopped by the beach - where can you see sand n snow on the beach in a sunny day?! As well as by the lighthouseVisited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 March 2024
- BMiller2013Milwaukee, Wisconsin218 contributionsThings to do in Peninsula State ParkPeninsula State Park consists of over 3,770 acres which is the largest state park in Door Co. Visitors can golf the 18-hole course, hike, bike, swim or fish in the warmer months and cross country ski groomed trails or snowmobile or sled in the winter months. There are 472 campsites (165 of those are electric campsites). Definite highlights of the park are checking out Eagle Tower or Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. There is also evening performances at the Northern Sky Theater amphitheater in the summer.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 April 2024
- RICART75Peru, Indiana2,423 contributionsOne of the highlights...On this year's visit, the Park had pretty much shed its winter cloak; therefore we were able to experience some new options (for us). Eagle Tower was available to utilize; so we were able to walk the 850 ft ramp a couple of times, and enjoy the magnificent views of the peninsula and water. The Tower itself is worth a visit here. We also had access to the skyline route this year, and the engrossing perspective it presents. Though a bit more populated than on our previous visits, the park was still in its "laid-back mode"; allowing for a relaxing and peaceful appreciation of this wonderful natural offering. The Park continues to be one of the highlights of any trip we've made to Door County.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024
- MLSMilwaukee15 contributionsBeautiful state parkEnjoyed our time of hiking in this park. The eagle bluff trail is moderately challenging. (Bring your hiking shoes - no flip flops!) the printed map isn’t great so be aware of directions you’re heading.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 July 2024
- DanielleThompson s Station, Tennessee7 contributionsGreat sunset view from the beach!I spent an enjoyable day wandering through the park. The Eagle Tower is a definite highlight with amazing views. I love that they built an accessible ramp to the top of the tower, so more people can enjoy the view even if they aren’t up to climbing 100 steps. There are also several spots throughout the park with amazing sunset views.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 August 2024
- meganmomAppleton, Wisconsin28 contributionsGreat ParkWhether camping, biking, or hiking, this is a great park to visit. This was not my first time but was my husbands. We did a half day trip to Eagle Tower and hike eagle trail. (The trail said it was 2 miles, but my Garmin said was was more...) Eagle Trial is listed as difficult, definately wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, but if your moderately in shape you shoukd be fine.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 August 2024

Let me start off by saying this is one of my favorite state parks in Wisconsin. I have been coming here for over 40 years, since my parents brought the family that time ago. This trip up my family was here the last week in July. Many updates have been made since last year, including new vault toilets in the campgrounds, and redone showers as well. All those improvements were sorely needed and seem well executed. The big issue is the lack of presence of park staff. Due to Covid19 the DNR has chosen to neglect ALL state parks this year and not staff the contact stations. As a result some campers are taking liberties with the situation. Overcrowded campsites, some with 3 or more vehicles, 3 or 4 tents on a site, others with an RV and 3 tents. Although the website claimed all campsites in Welckers, Tennison Bay, and Nicolet Bay were booked solidly during that time except for a sporadic opening here and there, we noted a number of sites were never occupied during the 5 days we were there. What gives? Also the park has now eliminated walk up sites and made all "reservable". The Sunset Bike trail is a jewel, but like all jewels it needs attention. For a 2 way trail, it narrows to 2 feet in some spots from its normal 5-6' width. That is dangerous for a trail as heavily used as it is, and with the rather wobbly riding of some of its users. Vegetation encroachment in some areas also makes it hazardous when bikers pass one another in some sections. This bike trail is beautiful, and as such is utilized by hundreds of cyclists a day during the summer season. Treat this jewel with the care it deserves due it its overwhelming popularity. DNR get your act together, don't waste time mowing campsites with no grass in them, fix the trails.

Peninsula State Park is a gem when visiting Door County. Plenty of hiking and bike paths and beautiful views of the water. We highly recommend staying in camp sites starting with 864. Make sure you keep an eye on your camping supplies - raccoons, skunks and other critters like to wander in on your camp site. One morning we were visited by two red squirrels that got into one of our grocery bags and bit a hole in the cinnamon raisin bread. The bathroom facilities are very clean and the campgrounds are kept up well.

This is definitly a place to visit, many hiking and bicycle trails and stunning views year round. We were there in late october and thought we missed the color peak. This year 2019 was a little behind on cooler weather so it actually peaked later this year. We were lucky enough to be there during the peak and were able to get postcard looking pictures. This is an A+++ place to visit. This was our 2nd visit to peninsula state park.

Don't miss the Sunset Bike path at Peninsula State Park. The full loop is just under ten miles through beautiful cedar woods, marsh land, green parks, and great water views. Lots of bike rentals at the entrance to the park.

This is a large park offering a variety of activities. We used to visit the park frequently during family trips to DC. We went on a Friday about mid-morning and it was already very busy. We tried to visit the lighthouse, but it was closed for private tours only that day. Many more people with dogs than we previously remembered. Plus the park is bike friendly and so you'll likely encounter groups which are spread out and dominating paths and roadways. If you've got children, you could probably easily spend several hours here.

We stopped at Peninsula State Park a few times during our trip and could have stopped a few more with there being so much to do there. The new observation tower is breathtaking and accessible - I haven't seen anything like it at other state parks and was overjoyed to see how many people are now able to access the tower. The tower is a popular destination right now since it just recently opened - be mindful that parking will be difficult near the tower on a popular/sunny day.

I enjoyed playing 9 holes at the golf course (that review elsewhere), and then we came back and did a little hiking & watched the sunset on some rocks by the shore. They do a good job of having a few different places to go to the shore & just watch the sun & call it a day - spacing out the areas so you have some privacy to get cozy w/ your loved one. There's also a bunch of dragonflies by the lighthouse & a few good trails inside.

A drive through the park is awesome but to stop and visit the new tower or the old Lighthouse. Great place for a round of golf or just bring the camping equipment and stay a while. Our only disappointment was, we had tickets to the Northern Sky theatre at night and it was cancelled by a rain storm that moved through.

My family and I have been camping there for years, we love it! We usually tent camp at Nicolet Bay to be near swimming and fishing. There are a plethora of outdoor activities and miles of scenic hiking/biking trails. I would recommend a minimum stay of 3-4 days to fully absorb the parks beauty.

. . . and I have been to too many state parks and campgrounds for me to list -- AT LEAST three dozen, mostly in Maine, New Hampshire, California, Colorado ,Arizona and Utah, and this park is the most beautiful of all of them, in my opinion.
If you like woodland trails alongside breathtaking waterfront, this is a not be missed.
It is also impeccably maintained and it wasn't too busy even on a Friday morning (July 9). Plenty of room for bicycles, trail pedestrians, AND cars. (As opposed to Rocky Mountain National Park, for example, when going anytime during the summer is like exchanging one kind of traffic jam for another.)

How difficult is the sunset trail on bike? We are relatively beginner bike riders and are thinking of doing this ride. Thanks!

Peninsula has numerous bike trails. A park map will help you understand which is best for you in terms of number if miles and difficulty. Some are exclusively through the woods on trails while others also go on roads. I can’t remember the names of all the trails but would suggest you stay in the Forest since those trails have fewer hills than the trails on the roads. Hope that helps!

My family and I are heading up the last week of June, we are new to kayaking and curious if the area is easy or dangerous? Any tips would be welcome.

This is a very nice area and not dangerous at all. Really nice and accommodating park. You and your family will enjoy.

Are you asking about the main entrance? Its in Fish creek city, on the left side...Look for JULEES CAFE at the foot of entrance ( it has a GIANT PURPLE chair) The fee is around $8 for the day. The exit is all the way around the park ( it makes a circle drive ) near the golf course...then down the hill is the net town of Ephrium. GOOD LUCK and have fun!!!

Does anyone know if the state park has bike rentals? Or maybe somewhere else in Fish Creek that has bike rentals?
Written 9 July 2018
There are two places for Bike rentals. One across the street from the entrance called Nor Door Sports & Cyclery which We have rented from before & have no complaints. There is also one called Edge of Park Rentals as you go in the main entrance to your right have never rented from them.

Google "Wisconsin state park admission fees" and you'll get a chart listing various fees. A lot depends on whether or not you are a Wisconsin resident, if you're going for only 1 day, if you want to purchase an annual sticker, etc.

We are planning on camping at Peninsula in September. Haven't been there in 20 years. We have a 30 foot trailer. Any recommendations on which campground we should stay at? There are a handful of sites in the South Nicolet Bay campground and quite a few available in the Tennison Bay campground.
Written 10 February 2018
We had no problems finding a site for our 42 footer. great park.
Written 23 March 2018
How hard is it to get a camping site designated at first come? I would hate to drive there and have nowhere to stay. If you go on a Friday, what time should you plan to be there?
Written 18 July 2017
I do not know conclusively, but I know that Friday and Saturday are the most crowded evenings at any of the five state parks in Door County. They are also the most crowded nights at the hotels and bed-and-breakfasts. You might have to camp outside of Door County and drive there (say 45 min to 1.5 hours away) in the day. Same with hotel stays. I think Peninsula St Pk and Newport St Pk allow reservations to be made online ahead of arrival.
