--History--

Tacoma Art Museum was founded by a group of volunteers in 1935 and has since grown to become a national model for regional, mid-sized museums. The museum is dedicated to exhibiting and collecting Northwest art, with the mission of connecting people through art. The museum's permanent collection includes the premier collection of Dale Chihuly's glass artwork on permanent public display.

Tacoma Art Museum opened at its current location on May 3, 2003, when it moved from a former bank building that was built in 1920. Nearly twice the size of its previous location, Tacoma Art Museum's $22-million Antoine Predock-designed structure provides the space to exhibit more of the permanent collection. In designing the building, Predock drew inspiration from the region's light, its relationship to the water, the neighborhood's industrial history and character, Mount Rainier, the Thea Foss Waterway, and the surrounding structures in what is now known as the Museum District.

Completed in November 2014, an addtional $15.5 million building project has added approximately 16,000 square feet, and houses the new Haub Family Collection of Western American Art. This collection establishes Tacoma Art Museum as the only major museum of Western American art of this caliber in the Northwest. It also enables the museum to fully explore the art history of the West while integrating its Western and Northwest collections. It's an exciting time to be a part of the Tacoma Art Museum family!

--Mission and Vision--

Tacoma Art Museum is a public-spirited institution with nationally recognized exhibitions and innovative educational programs. Named by USA Today as one of the "Top 10 Great Places to See Art in Smaller Cities," the museum has developed a reputation for presenting art in a thought-provoking yet accessible manner with a strong commitment to Northwest art through its acquisition and exhibition programs. Founded in 1935, the museum has strong roots in the community and anchors Tacoma's lively downtown university and museum district.

Not intending to visit a museum this trip we decided to kill some time. I was surprised at the caliber of the facility and the art it has attracted. The selections in the hall were quite varied - Western Art to glass to sculpture to culture modern - all of which I was impressed by. I found the layout fascinating... More

Wonderful exhibit of Chihuly glass art and an interesting display of Black art and craft art, the western history section was not as impressive. The Chihuly section was top notch, definitely worth a visit. I spent approx. 2 hours at the museum. Parking was abundant.

We loved our visit to the TAM. We ran out of time to see everything and so wish we could come back soon!! Very open and airy, with lots of spaces welcoming you to sit and enjoy the art peacefully. Great exhibits from local artist.

Stopped in with my family on a visit to see our daughter attending college close by. We were very impressed with this museum. Very nice display of art glass as you would expect but also houses a wonderful modern painting selection upstairs as well as a very nice western display downstairs. Also, we were reminded all Pacific Lutheran students have... More

I was impressed and I'm a critical museum-goer. They had an excellent exhibition of Western art, of glass art, of contemporary black women's art, and more. I had no special interest in the themes but the curator managed to make them compelling.

It’s unusual to see this range of art exhibits in an art museum. When we visited there were 3 major themes in the exhibits - western, glass and African American artists. I’m from the midwest where we don’t see a lot of western art. I was really impressed by the variety of styles and quality of work on this theme.... More

It's a really nice museum with a rotation of shows. It's way less pretentious than the SAM, and a little cheaper, as well. Like the SAM, though, it's heavy on Chihuly stuff.

My husband is in school and one assignement was to go to the museum and rate what we thought of it. We loved it they had a showcase which featured art from African Americans. Some of the most powerful art I have ever seen. I think we took a million pictures

It's a small museum. You don't need more than an hour or two to visit. It has some great hands on activities for children.
