- Jason HennigRenton, Washington404 contributionsWonderful, Popular TrailWhile on a little trip up near the border to visit some friends, we all met up here. It was a great decision! Beautiful trails, beautiful waterfalls, and a beautiful day meant it was a lovely afternoon walk. For a trail, it can be a little crowded, though.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 April 2024
- mom22sonsHillsboro, Oregon736 contributionsBeautiful forest in the middle of the cityAmazing place to hike and see the waterfalls. Lot of old growth trees. So beautiful to walk and hear the birds and the water flowing. There are benches around to sit down and take in the sights and sounds. Total loop of park is about 4 miles. Great for families and couples. Runners as well.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 May 2024
- ND FVancouver, Canada565 contributionsGreat view of the falls from the bridgeEnjoyed the spring runoff in the river while taking in the view of the falls. Parked at the Woburn Street entrance to the park and walked east to the falls. The trail is well groomed and very firm footing. Well marked and many folks had their dogs out for the day. Elevation change isn’t significant so it’s fairly easy to walk in most areas.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024
- Lady GigglemugMonrovia, California4,771 contributionsGreat PNW trails and gorgeous waterfalls!Really lovely park near Bellingham with easy hiking trails, numerous waterfalls, playgrounds, picnic areas, and even a trout hatchery to explore! It was a great place to stop and stretch our legs on our spring break road trip from Seattle up to Vancouver. The largest waterfall - Whatcom Falls (aka Whirlpool Falls according to Wiki) - is easily accessible via a well maintained, paved, and quite picturesque bridge that puts you right in front of it. An unpaved hiking trail continues on for a few miles past the bridge and was a tad muddy but well maintained. The falls are only about 10 feet tall but beautiful and quite powerful on our visit from all the snowmelt. Apparently it’s a very popular swimming hole in the warmer months. We visited in early March and there was still snow on the ground and pretty cold. There’s also a large trout hatchery in the park run by Bellingham Technical College. There are info signs and numerous pools fed by the river - very interesting to explore. I’d love to see it during hatching season! It’s free to enter. There’s lot of paved parking, clean bathrooms, picnic tables, and it’s very easy to find from the highway. Definitely worth a stop!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 July 2024

Beautiful grounds, well maintained walking/ running trails. The falls are easily found on the main trail and are active through the year even in the summer dryer months. There are bathroom facilities as well as covered picnic areas. Dogs allowed on a leash and picking up after them is enforced.

Very green and lovely park with a beautiful waterfall and a number of hiking trails. The Whatcom Falls Park is located in the quaint town of Bellingham. While the hikes aren't super difficult, you don't need to hike at all to see the waterfalls - it is only a few feet from the parking lot on a paved trail. You have the option to walk around a little to get on top of the falls as well. The waterfalls are not enormous, but they are very pretty and had a soothing effect. There is a stone bridge with a view to the falls, that looks magnificent in the setting as well. The park isn't far from downtown Bellingham and is a must visit if you are in or around the area.

One of my favorite aspects of visiting this public park is how filled it was with people enjoying it. Hiking, picnicking, or just staring at a stream, it represented the best of a public space. As the long-time maintenance worker at the park near our home once said, "Parks are meant to be used." They're not museums. They're not for a select few. Whatcom is a public space filled with meandering, interconnected trails that, for this non-Northwesterner, were magically different than what I'm used to.

We were here right at the end of May and the falls were very uninspiring. Several people said they are not normally like that, and seeing the pictures they look spectacular. But even without the falls, there are nice paths along the river, and some good swimming holes if you wanted to get into the water. Definitely a great place for a natural getaway in the midst of Bellingham.

It was very peaceful to be able to walk by the river and falls. I am not sure if I would call them falls as they're not that big. I think at the end of spring after more rain it would have been more impressive. There are many walking trails around the area which I liked.

Gorgeous park, can see all of it in just a couple of hours. Also great stop is limited on time in area which I had and am glad I picked this as my one place to stop. Nice kept trails, beautiful large trees and of course the falls along with stone bridge.

Visiting from out of state. Seattle was way too hot so we explored north. Tiny waterfall. Great trials. Lots of shade. Lots of hard packed trials. Be careful for fast moving cyclists. The falls are close to parking lot. We hiked about three miles. You can do as much or as little. Tons of people in the water.

Finally made time to visit this park and we were not disappointed. The place is close to town but feels like you're far out of the city. Nice place for a walk or to find a shady place to read.

We didn't know there were two parking lots at first.
Our GPS routed us to what we now call the upper parking lot. From there, there were no clear signs about where the falls were. We asked some folks, and they directed us down a long steep path. My husband started walking down it to see if there was a chance I could make it. We was able to see that there was a lower parking lot. We drove around in that direction and found it -- the sign is positioned for cars traveling from the other direction.
From the lower parking lot, the path was moderate for me. There was a waist-high fence that I could use to help steady myself. So taking it slowly, I was able to make it down to the waterfall.
The waterfall itself wasn't going great guns when we were there, but it was nevertheless beautiful, as was the surrounding area.

Hi. I'll be in Bellingham for part of a day & love the photos of Whatcom Falls, so I want to see it (them?) in person. When I look at pdf maps of the parks (is there more than one with falls?) and the trails from the Bellingham Trail Guide website, I can't tell where the falls are. Can you help? Where exactly should we park for the falls? Which trail should we take to reach the falls? Anything else I should know before going?
Written 23 June 2018
The trail is in the middle of the parking lot to the left if you are driving in. I did not do the whole trail only to the bridge where the main falls are.

Is there a nice place in the park to sit and read a book?
Written 14 July 2017
Yes, there are many places in the park to read a book. If you want to be near the falls, I would of course bring a folding chair or spread a blanket.
Written 15 July 2017
About how long does it take to get around the park if we were to stick to the main trail area and view the falls?
Written 25 October 2016
you can do in as little as 10 minutes. the falls are right off the parking lot. if you follow the trails you can walk for as long as you'd like.

How can I get to the Park using public transportation from the city?
