The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

Great for people of all ages but especially for school groups. College students will appreciate after they read plays. Actors were solid in every part. Love the musical openings and intermissions-a real bonus. Be sure to come early for the pre-show. All the photos you...More

Repertoire cast performs Shakespeare in an exact replica the Blackfriar Theater. Staged in almost the same bare manner as they were originally performed. Fun pre play music played my cast before the show and during intermission.

Absolutely amazing performance of Hamlet, set in the surrounds of the reconstructed Shakespearean theatre. If you are in the area you really have to check out this troop.

This was my first visit to the ASC. After weeks of excitement and anticipation, my expectations were almost unreasonably high, but the show ("Hamlet") exceeded them. The entire cast was incredible...we left speechless and emotionally exhausted. Even the building itself is fascinating. The atmosphere in...More

It was really interesting to see a reproduction of the Blackfriars theatre and experience the relationship of audience and performers at close proximity with no "lights out." The performance was good enough, acting a bit less than top notch--what you might expect from a good...More

My husband and I have been here about 4 times so far to see plays. It is a very unique theater and we really enjoy the shows. You can buy some drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and sit back and watch the show, It is nice...More

This was our fourth visit to see the Blackfriars performers. Each time we have been totally pleased with the performances. The actors are talented and professional. The cost is very reasonable for this level of experience of the performers. We definitely will be returning for...More

We've been to a lot of Shakespeare theatres in Canada, the US, and England, of course, so we were eager to check out BlackFriars in Staunton VA. Unusual amenities offered by the attentive staff: scripts to read while the show was performing; cushions to soften...More

We live near Philadelphia, but every time we visit the area the American Shakespeare's performances are always a highlight of our trip. In early December, we saw Every Christmas Story Ever Told and Then Some and it was hilarious. Also, they always mix in audience...More

We saw the Theater's adaptation of a Christmas Carol. Well done and the interaction between the players and the audience is a great reason to sit up front! Our first visit was Julies Caesar and we look forward to coming back for Hamlet and Macbeth...More

Yes the seats in front of the stage do have individual backs. In addition one can find a limited number of sleeve cushions to fit over the backs to make them even more comfortable. Ask the ushers where they are

To be honest Tom it would depend on the play. I think it may be hard for the 5 year old to sit through a play. 10 and 12, I think would get a kick out of it. I would call the theatre and ask them what they suggest, they are... More
