The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

Our family loves going to Staunton to visit the American Shakespeare Theater. We wish we didn't live 350 miles away. When we go, as we did recently, we try to see as many performances as possible. Last weekend it was three (Merchant of Venice, School for Scandal, and Coriolanus). Performed as an "actor-driven and actor-directed" set of five offerings during... More

the American Shakespeare center is the next best. We saw Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" which was superbly performed by a great cast of actors. If you like Shakespeare this is the place to see his plays just as they were performed about 4 centuries ago, except with the comfort of electricity and a few other amenities.

What a great experience. Watching a play inside this theater is so much different from what we are used to. It is an intimate venue. You are so close to the performers. You can even select a seat on the stage if you want. Sometimes, Shakespeare can be a little hard to understand, but is not the case here. Everything... More

Discovered ASC in 2011. Since then friends and I meet in Staunton for each of the company's seasonal productions: spring/summer; fall; renaissance. they are TERRIFIC.

My sister and I came to the playhouse to simply see the theatre and were told that we could come back later for the free dress-rehearsal of "Shakespeare's Sister". I am so glad that we did. Just sitting there would have been enough as the theatre is beautiful, but in addition we were serenaded and entertained for 2 hours. The... More

You will enjoy the plays even if you are not a Shakespeare freak. It is fun to be entertained by the actors so that the performance is as entertaining as the play itself.

Backstage tour was absolutely great. Info on history, costume design, rehearsals, stage trap doors, makeup etc. Was all covered. Reasonable price as well.

Great venue, unique experience and such talented performers. Worth grabbing some cliff notes on a show prior to watching as the authentic Shakespearean can get confusing at times. If you are in Staunton a must do!

We have been there twice, taking visiting family members both times. We all very much enjoyed the venue, the plays, the cast and the whole experience. The staff and the cast are very friendly. Beverages are available before the performance and at intermission. Parking at a Staunton municipal garage is just around the corner. We will definitely be going again.
