This is a lovely gem hidden in Stafford County. It's not a long walk - it takes about 30 minutes to walk it at a brisk pace. Paths are well maintained and the historical quarry is interesting.

Government Island is a unique historical place where the building blocks of many of Washinton DC's most famous structures had th err start. Aquia Stone the blocks that built the White House were cut from larger rock formations located on the island. Some of the areas where this work took place are visible and easy to walk in and about.... More

Lovely place for walking/running/hiking. The trails offer terrific views Aquia Creek, including some rather impressive homes. The hidden secret is that this area once was used to quarry sandstone used in some of the early government buildings in Washington DC. The remains of the quarry are still there and you get a sense of how much work it was to... More

Nice place for a casual walk and a quick history lesson. Not much else to speak of though. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of historical markers.

Easy walking for families with small children, dogs. The trails are in the woods, wide and well maintained. They are entirely under trees, with occasional water views and some remains of an 18th century quarry (which is the historical significance). Since this is an area with limited outdoor amenities, Government Island is a welcome addition to the county. Takes about... More

Super interesting and very scenic. The story boards are informative and pertinent. This is important American history that you can actually touch. The walking trails are restful and pretty...I only wish they were longer.

We stopped by here simply because we were driving by and it is a slice of American History that we often overlook. We were pleasantly surprised by this park. The paths were well maintained, the waysides/interpretive signs were clean, clear and informative. It was a great walk that combined nature (Snakes, blue herons, fish, squirrels and so much more) and... More
