Museum chronicles the history of the Isle of Wight County with a special emphasis on water, ham and agricultural industries. The exhibits include prehistoric fossils, Native American and Colonial artifacts, a turn-of-the-century country store, displays interpreting the Smithfield ham industry and perhaps the museum’s most notable artifact: the world’s oldest, edible cured ham.

The museum is interesting for its Civil War, Native American and Colonial history. It was great fun to look through the vintage Sears & Roebuck catalogue in the general store display. It's worth dropping in...

Good insights into this area's history. A museum that doesn't take all day to see the exhibits. Only "down side" was seeing some articles from our youth (e.g. rollerskates, electric coffee pot) on display in a museum! Current events have become ancient history! But a...More

This small museum is well laid out, clean, interactive and has a lot to see. You can learn so much about the area and early times, but it doesn't take all day. You still have time to visit other places in town too.

This museum covers the history of Isle of Wight county to include the civil war in the county and the rise of the Smithfield ham business. It was very informative.

This museum is just a great place to spend time. My kids loved it and really enjoyed the scavenger hunt. In addition to that they also had a lot hands on activities for them. The displays were well done for a small museum. The country...More

We were greeted by the docent at the museum who was very friendly. She explained so many things about the history of the county. When I told her I had ancestors who lived there in the 1600s she directed me to books that they had...More

A museum should not be judged on the size but on the contents, education and the feelings. The old time country store was amazing. We did not get enough time to explore like we wanted. Worth the visit to learn about the history of the...More

Always stop in here when in Smithfield. Lots of interesting things. The kids will love it. The largest smoked ham is still there. Very friendly staff that know the area well

It's small and pleasant, just like Smithfield. We are lucky to have some folks who care about local history and artifacts working at the museum! Admission is by donation, usually just a couple of bucks, a lot of people stop back by and drop a...More

I took three of my Grandchildren through and they really enjoyed it! They had a children's section with colonial clothing to try on and fossils hidden in sand they could dig through and expose.
