- Nicole C5 contributionsGreat Experience!Great experience, be sure to sit on the right side of the train when you depart so you can see the beautiful scenery. Make sure you've booked a return ticket (if that is what you want) as it is a little confusing and a few people thought the had returns however only had one ways. Good trip!Visited January 2023Written 5 February 2023
- Lea MGeelong, Australia17 contributionsGo and enjoy the serenity.....Walhalla is a unique experience. Quaint buildings, friendly locals both human and fauna. The rail trip was worth it . Only $30pp return and a real credit to the volunteers who are dedicated to their railway passion. The Wally Pub is a real meeting place. The food and beer are an inroad into a loooong lunch , or an equally looooong dinner. We camped at North Gardens free camp . Very peaceful surrounds. Flushing toilets , electric bbq's, fire pits and plenty of grass if you are tenting. Also water taps , but not recommended for drinking unless boiled.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 February 2023
- Melanie H2 contributionsLovely train tripWe did the 11am trip to Thomson and back. We enjoyed the commentary which was available through earphones after scanning a QR code. We thought it might be a steam engine but it’s not, definitely like a big truck engine with the exhaust to match. It pulls 2 carriages, one is very open with wooden bench seats and the other a bit more enclosed (but still open sides from waist up) and padded seats. The pace is fairly sedate along the narrow gauge track which winds its way along a creek and over some excitingly high bridges. Don’t stick your head out too far, sometimes there are rock walls within touching distance! The cafe on site is interestingly decorated with old fashioned items. All the train and station staff were very friendly and helpful.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 February 2023
- Jo BShepparton, Australia10 contributionsVery Enjoyable rattle through historyThis was a wonderful train ride. We did this trip on a beautiful summers day and thoroughly enjoyed it. The hand made track in the rugged terrain is just a small insight into how tough life was in Walhalla in the early 1900's. Great views of of the creek as it meanders over water falls and through cuttings in rock. Great free commentary through your ear phones so remember to take with you. Very cheap outing and lovely volunteers running the whole show. Well done.Visited February 2023Written 28 February 2023
- UmangaMelbourne, Australia26 contributionsNostalgicLovely outing…. 6 yr old was very excited & I think the adults enjoyed it as much as she did. Very easy booking online & fuss free at the location. We did the round trip & was an enjoyable trip. Enjoyed the food & coffee at the little cafe at the station. Lovely people working both at the station & the cafe. Worth the tripVisited April 2023Written 8 April 2023
- pmiddling1Melbourne, Australia14 contributionsA Must Do At WalahallaA really lovely train ride! Beautiful scenery. Fun for all ages. Walhalla is a very small town, so the train ride is a necessary activity. The ride was from Walhalla to Thomson Station. We were given 20mins to explore the Thomson Dam (which was the highlight of the trip) before returning to Walhalla Station.Visited April 2023Written 10 April 2023
- Paul BChirnside Park, Australia289 contributionsA magical experienceWow. What an amazing little railway. Worth the price and the staff were so super friendly. People even brought their dogs along with them. Make sure you buy a return ticket, stating at Walhalla. Sit on the right hand side and as there are two carriages, try one on the way there and the other on the way back.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 April 2023
- Rebecca v6 contributionsA must doA great experience and put it on your list of things to see and do. We rode in the open carriage on the way to the station and within the closed carriage on the way back. My eldest (8 year old) was able to stand on the carriage platform which was a great experience. The area is beautiful. Make sure you visit the long tunnel gold mine and do the tour, very interesting.Visited April 2023Written 13 April 2023
- Maxlec10Melbourne, Australia22 contributionsBygone train rideHaving done the train trip many years ago and thoroughly enjoying we were glad to do it again . Unfortunately our train trip was canc6due to broken part.but being so isolated they couldn't get it fix in time . We were offered a full refund but I was happy not to take it. The train is one of the attraction that help Walhalla survive.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2023

Amazing that this little piece of history was able to be saved from destruction and able to be restored in the way it has been. Absolute credit to the volunteers who run it. A thoroughly enjoyable ride through the picturesque mountain side and back.

What a great experience!. The little train takes you through beautiful scenery, along the creek with some waterfalls. Sit on right hand side of train because this is the side that follows the creek. Going out the back of the train offers a special experience as well. It is not too long and stops at Thomson Station for about 20 minutes which is long enough to walk down to the river for some great photo opportunities. We had no problem getting the commentary to work, but I ended up focusing more on the photo opportunities anyway. A must do when in Walhalla!

Scenery was lovely, & staff were very friendly. Sadly, no-one on our carriage could get the WiFi commentary to work. I don't know what issue the other passengers had, but with our phones they both required a password and the instructions said one wasn't necessary! Well - for our phones - one was! So, even though there were speakers in our carriage, the alternative commentary didn't come through, so we knew nothing of what we were looking at, nor did we hear the stories of how the train line came to be, how it was built, how long it took, what it was used for etc etc. Very disappointing. A shame really as all the volunteers work really hard to make this train ride happen. Bus tours have commentary come through speakers for all to hear, this train ride should simply do the same. Forget about WiFi, not everyone has headphones anyway!

Went for a day-trip to Walhalla and did this tour. The scenery was amazing and the rail cutting is steep and the valley is surprisingly deep. Great for the family, easy access. Highly recommend doing this,

Went on the night train, with two friends and two well-behaved dogs, and although the weather wasn't the best it was still a good night and the hot chocolate and marshmallows were a welcome touch at the halfway point - as well as the blankets and hot water bottles. The staff were friendly and everything went as it should have - oh, and look out for the penguin!

We (two couples) participated in the night train event recently and despite the cold weather it was just delightful. The staff were fabulous and made every effort to make sure customers were comfortable, offering blankets and hot water bottles. The trip was great, with plenty to see and enjoy, and we enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate at the halfway point. As the trip only goes for a little over an hour, it is worth the experience.

Hi Camexebe,
Thomson Station is on the main Rd into Walhalla. It's 2 wheel drive friendly, and does have a car park. Hope this helps.
