Overview
More
Built in 1910 as the Training Barracks and Armoury for a prestigious paramilitary organization in Durrell known as the Arm Lads Brigade. The museum is perched on the top of a hill overlooking the picturesque town of Durrell. It provides a panoramic view overlooking the ocean and a photographer's paradise viewing and photographing majestic icebergs as they pass through Iceberg Alley. The museum houses Officers and Lads ALB uniforms, rifles (surplus from the Boer War, and the First and Second World Wars), brass band instruments and community artifacts depicting the way of life of a typical outport fishing settlement from the late 1800's and the early 1900's. Also featured is a mounted Polar Bear exhibit and recently added Great Auk exhibit. Locally hand made crafts, quilts and knitted items for sale in renovated gift shop. Free Wi-Fi. Durrell Museum and Crafts is fast becoming a major tourist attraction and choice destination for the many tourists and visitors to the Twillingate area.

This was surprisingly a nice little museum. I think we paid $5.00per person. Lots of neat history about the area and they even have a polar bear.

I went there to see the polar bear display. Ended up purchasing a handmade quilt. Staff were very helpful in helping me pack it for shipping. Worth the time to view this museum.

This is a very small and simple presentation but interesting to see. Nice people. Large building but not a place that takes more than a few minutes.

If you are interested in learning about Auk's this is a great place to visit. And there is so much more to learn about the area here too. Check out the beautiful vistas from the parking lot ...a good spot to take photos!

Worth the small admission just to see a stuffed polar bear. Other interesting stuff to see as well. There is a small craft shop as well. The admission was $3.00

This seasonal museum tells the story of the settlement of the area along with the military contribution made by the residents to the effort of the First and Second World Wars.

Some local interest but not comparable to the Wooden Boat Museum; more like a storage for white elephant sale.
