Though most of the castle was knocked down centuries ago you can still get a really good feel from this old building. The interpretation boards give you good quality information and help you create a picture of what the place must have been like. The views are pretty stunning as well

Wow, what an unexpected pleasure visiting this historic castle. We went on the guided tour which was very affordable and recommended and went underground. The current improvements will certainly be of spectacular benefit once they have been complete which won't be long. Fascinating and impressive.

When we visited the place was a building site and the builders had gone bankrupt we were told. There is effectively no place inside open as such and any view is obstructed by fencing. That's not the fault of the heritage people its just a fact. All that said from the plans it will be first class once the work... More

Pontefract castle was the most reveared castle in the country. Many royals visited it and some died in it. King Richard the 2nd was the most famous. Some historians say he was murdered but it was believed he was starved to death in one of the dungeons.

Although much of the castle is undergoing restoration the cellar tour is definitely worth a trip. Staff were passionate and knowledgeable and told some brilliant stories about the castles history. There are cellar tours everyday at 3pm. You can see graffiti from the civil war and hear about Kings from the Middle Ages who lived and died at Pontefract Castle.... More

Visited Pontefract and headed for the castle which is only a short walk from the town centre and well signposted. It is at the present time having lots of restoration work done together with the building of a new larger visitor centre. We popped into the existing one to check if it was still ok to walk around the site.... More
