Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We are passing through here with our sailboat!
This marina is a cheek in itself!
Why? I'll get to that now:
54€ per day for a 35 ft boat!
Completely dirty and in need of renovation sanitary facilities!
The jetties are occupied by 90% of the excursion boats, which means constant sound with loud music!
Thousands of tourists on the jetties who want to go to these boats for the river trips!
Hundreds of times a day these boats dock at the jetties!
The bay is designated as an anchorage, but all those who try are chased away!
The marina needs the paying guests!
And anchoring would be free!

Our hotel was in Vila Nova de Gaia, it was the last day of our vacation, and we had an evening flight to look forward to, so we didn't want to do anything too strenuous. My wife suggested a walk along by the Douro Marina, and I was happy to go along with that.
We made our way down towards the river via a series of paths and stairs, to find ourselves in a very relaxed haven. Compared to the Porto side it was very much quieter and more relaxed, and more especially along towards the marina. There were a few others having a stroll about, like ourselves, and a good number of cyclists in the area too. There were a few restaurants and cafes dotted along the promenade. It was nice to see the yachts and pleasure craft in the marina, we chose to pause there for a while. Further along the promenade, in the direction of the mouth of the river, you will find a very large row of seating areas, and a little distance further on is a Nature Reserve.
All in all, the whole place was so relaxed and enjoyable, with great views across the Douro River to Porto. If you enjoy peace, tranquillity, being near to the river, viewing some yachts and pleasure craft, nature and wildlife, then this walk down by the marina may well just suit you!

This part of Gaia, which used to be Porto's poor cousin, used to be a bit run-down with little reason to attract visitors other than the wine cellars located here. These still exist of course but now along the river is a completely modernized walkway together with nice restaurants and cafés. You can start a walk here and walk or cycle several kilometers along the river bank. Probably the best part of this location is the view you have of the old part of Porto across the river, with its colorful houses climbing up the hillside. Starting in September 2016 a river taxi started carrying passengers from the Ribeira to this Douro Marina. The boats carry 28 passengers and the crossing takes 3 minutes. Fares are 3 euros for adults so that is one euro a minute. Not exactly the salary of Cristiano Ronaldo but good money if you can make it.

We were greeted and helped onto our berth by marina staff. Office staff in reception were efficient and helpful and pointed out the various organisations that receive discount on mooring fees including then
RYA. Lovely local town with excellent fish restaurants prepared by the whole family. It really would have been a perfect stay but for the showers which were mouldy and insanitary. Really no excuse for not cleaning them properly for a high class marina like this it really in unacceptable.

There is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the tourist Cais de Ribeira and the Ribeira Square on the opposite side of the river. Here at the foot of the cable car and beyond are the port lodges, the marina and just as many wine bars and restaurants. They area little cheaper than their counterparts on the opposite bank, but not much. There is a good contrast of old and new here and if you walk behind the riverside promenade (follow directions to Croft's) you find yourself lost in the old backstreets. All of the Port lodges have tastings and shops so you are spoilt for choice. Theres a free tasting usually offered by the table car ticket office at the top. A couple of hours spent wandering here are well worth it just to soak up the history and the regeneration riverside. Highly recommended.

One not to miss - the local fish specialties landed by traditional fishing boats and available to buy as you wander through the marina. So many types of fish - you can't go wrong!

As our eldest and his fiancé live a 15 minute walk away this is a favourite haunt of ours. Good as a place to chill and relax with a bit of people watching. Alternatively use it as a base for walks along the river to the coast and the nature reserve. It is also good as a calling in place if you are walking into Gaia proper and the port houses- about a 25 minute stroll. The views out to sea, over into Porto and up river are superb. Nearby is the local fish market. The smell of the barbecued sardines from the small bars is mouth watering. Oh and the modern architecture is also worth a look.

When we arrived at Douro Marina I was shocked. It was like landing in sight of the International Space Station. Then we walked through the environs, sipped our coffee, drank our beer, strolled through the buildings that breath with the village streets they are built onto. One of the great designs in Europe, though simple. Great because it succeeds in giving you great comfort and atmosphere while keeping you connected to the old landscape. Who would have imagines such a bright, modern structure would be so good a representative of old Portugal. It works because it puts you in touch with the seascape and, most importantly, the amazing people who staff its halls!

After we walked across the bridge, we kept walking along the waterfront in front of some of the port houses. This small but pleasant marina was on the river side. Nice views.

The marina isn't very big, but what a great location near the estuary of the Douro river, I spent several days here (I rented a small boat via Airbnb), it was a wonderful experience and a great base to discover this particular side of the river, definitely less touristy!
