Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Quinta do Panascal is home to the highly acclaimed Fonseca Port Wine and a good first vineyard to visit on the way to Pinhao.
Due to its location and the narrow road, you will never find a bus tour here. It is the perfect place to take their audio guide and stroll through the terraced vineyard looking down to the river and valley. It was very tranquil here and no one is rushing you.
The audio guide, narrated by someone who sounds like James Bond, takes you to ten stops. Here you get descriptions of what are seeing, the vineyard history, and why the grapes go so well on these particular hills.
The tour ends at the main building where you will see barrels and the grapes stomping room. At the tasting room next door, three different ports are poured. I recommend buying the local cheese platter and splurging $8 for a sample of single-year vintage port.

You have to drive a very narrow, curvy road to get here but it’s worth the effort. They have a variety of port tastings and you can order cheese or meat platters if you like. My tasting of 5 ports was excellent. Service was also excellent.
When you drive in there’s a small parking lot (6 or spaces in total on both sides of the road) and some steps that go up the side of the hill. Park there and walk up the steps. A lot of people, us included, drive past it.

After a 1 1/2 hour drive from Porto, we arrived at the Fonseca Winery. The tour of the vineyards was fascinating and explained very well. Different terracing techniques dating back to over 100 years were shown and discussed. Afterward, we had three port wine tastings followed by an elegant, private lunch on a balcony overlooking the vineyards. The meal ended with a half bottle of very good port which the majority of it we took back to our hotel.
The ride both ways was very scenic and the driver was very courteous and knowledgeable.
The entire excursion was arranged by Made for Spain and Portugal. The experience was seemless.

Beautiful river view and tucked away. Ports were very nice. Went on Monday afternoon. Our biggest issue was with the tasting room. There was a group tasting happening in the garden so we went down to the tasting room. The lady there was busy on her phone, then once we ordered and poured us a glass, she showed no interest in talking to us. Disappointing.

We headed here on the advice of the latest Rick Steves Book. Apparently, they have an audio guide that you can use yourself so you don't have to book an appt for touring the vineyard. We called around 3pm, they stated they closed at 6:30pm during November (same as their web site states). We got there at 5pm. Beautiful courtyard and setting. The lady there did not greet or even acknowledge us. I asked her if I can do the tour I called in earlier for. She stated they 'were closed' for tours, only at 10am. I asked her about the audio tours that they offer. She stated that yes those were available but not at this time (5pm which was 90 minutes before closing time). We left. It did not start to get dark until after 6pm. Not sure why she did not want to let us do the outside tour via the available audio guides and we could have finished off with the tastings inside. There was no one else there as far as customers.

My partner did the self guided tour, which he enjoyed, while I sat in the dappled shade of the terrace enjoying the stunning views. We also got the opportunity to watch some of the grape processing before enjoying a tasting.
We were glad to be there fairly early in the day, as it certainly got busier, including a very loud English private tour guide.

My wife and I had a great time using the short, self guided audio tour through the vineyard and listening to the history of the valley and creators of delicious ports. The woman who greeted us was very helpful and admitted later that she was feeling under the weather after delivering an enjoyable, educational, port tasting.

We emailed the Quinta in advance to make lunch reservations and were told reservations were only necessary for parties of 10 or more. Well we arrived for lunch and were then told that we would not be served because we didn't make a reservation. Maybe the language barrier was an issue but absolutely nothing was done to accommodate the error.

Have a bit of a uphill walk when arriving at the facility but the grounds and views from the patio are beautiful. The port wine is very nice and its neat to see some of the old foot stomping vats for the traditional production of the wines. We wish they had been able to ship back to states but we did walk out with some of the Siroco with makes a great port tonic.

Yes! The guide we had was very fluent in English since he'd lived in the USA for some time.

Bonne visite !
