Bussaco Forest and Bairrada Winery Route

2 reviews
Bairrada is one of Portugal’s most prestigious wine regions and lies just north of Coimbra. On this tour, learn more about Portuguese wine and Bairrada’s wine-making heritage as you visit one of two wine cellars, and sample the region’s famous sparkling wine. Afterwards, explore the natural landscapes of the Bussaco Forest and perhaps stop at a local restaurant to sample local delicacy, Roasted Piglet (own expense).

The Palacio and the forest are beautiful, but the Convento situated alongside the Palacio is a bit disappointing. It does not convey the same feeling of peace and serenity as the Convento dos Capuchos in Sintra. A few interesting paintings however. If you have 30 mn to spare while there, you might as well go. It won't ruin you and you will have no regrets.

Filled with hidden walkways and ancient stone paths, the forests, first planted by monks long, long ago, are well worth a visit. The train from Coimbra goes once a day only, and returns too shortly afterward to allow time for a visit, so be took an Uber to the forest, spend a beautiful morning, and then walked back into town and took the(much cheaper) train back. A lovely day trip. The cafteteria at the Convent is well stocked.

This is a charming place to visit if you are already planning to visit Busaco, and if you have an interest in the history of religion, and the beauty of religious artefacts. The chapels are attentively decorated, and tell a good deal of the spirit of the artist, and the attitude of the religious devotees who lived here. It's also interesting to see how cork is used in the decoration of the woodwork
