Worth the hike, paddle or ride.

I believe Lake Drummond is in Suffolk, possibly Chesapeake, but not Norfolk. The remoteness adds to the beauty.

I highly recommend paddling to this gorgeous lake filled with Cypress trees some large enough to paddle through. Make sure you check the weather before coming out to the lake as the water could be rough. If you are not comfortable paddling in white cap water then ensure that you are not going out on a windy day. Well worth... More

Situated in the heart of the Dismal Swamp this lake is a tranquil pleasure. And at its deepest it's only 6ft deep. Excellent for cayacking and canoes. Don't forget to bring your camera or cell phone. Frequently covered by "spooky" mist. If arriving by car there is one rugged road approaching from the west. But most visitors paddle in for... More

Lake Drummond is located in the middle of the Great Dismal Swamp. It is between Suffolk and Chesapeake , Virginia. The Suffolk side seems to have the best trails and the Chesapeake side has the water access. As with any swamp there are some critters to be aware of. There is also a campground on the East side of the... More

serene and quiet, lovely for canoe rides, in the spring the wisteria looks and smells wonderful, summer you will see a lot of bugs, biting flies, and tick, best time is spring and fall

The Dismal Swamp, including the area around Lake Drummond, is a great place for a hike or a leisurely walk. In the summer, the heat, humidity, and incredible number of insects can make it less so, so best for a coolish spring or autumn day.

We paddled Lake Drummond this past Sunday, Father's Day. That day was the last day of the current season to gain access to the lake via the "Railroad Ditch" gate and the "Interior Ditch" boat ramp. The week before, I mailed in an application, and, in return, they faxed me a "parking permit" I called them the Friday before to... More

Lake Drummond is part of The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. It is a remotely located, huge lake with Bald Cypress and many other trees in and around the water. In July, a friend and I kayaked from the Ballahack Rd boat ramp in Chesapeake (adjacent to the wonderful Dismal Swamp Canal Trail) to Lake Drummond. The journey started... More

Watch out for the shallow water there are a lot of stumps and other objects that can take out a small motor.

Take a bicycle and find one of the dirt walk/bikepaths on the NW side of the lake. If you go in summer cover yourself with bug juice and enjoy the ride and the views. Paddle the lake by taking the Dismal Swamp connector canal..portaging at the locks, then paddle a couple of miles in the lake. I'll do this again... More
