This Basilica, named "The End of Land" is built at the southernmost tip of the Italian heel, at a place where the Adriatic meets the Ionian sea.
The 18c Church with adjacent Monastery is on top of a hill above the town, imo a very average one, both outside and inside. Many souvenir stalls around further ruin the feeling, making it a very touristy place.
From the Church terrace is really a great seas view, but that's it - a max 45 min visit including the time for finding parking which is really an issue in August peak season.

This church square looks like a poor man's St. Peter's, but with nearby stunning views of the southernmost end of the Adriatic.

Parked near the marina and walk through the marina towards the steps up to the piazza. It was pre Easter weekend weekday so everything was closed and only a few visitors around. Quiet and peaceful we walked through the marina and went up the steps up to the piazza. Very pleasant walk and rewarded with even better views of the sea and the marina.

The place is actually called "the end of the land" as it is located at the very tip of the Salento peninsula which represents the heel of the Italian boot. The tourist town of Leuca and the beach are worth seeing, but the nearby lighthouse is certainly a spot you do not want to miss. A huge platform on a ledge oversees the Ionian and the Adriatic Sea, the views are just breathtaking, especially after rain, when visibility is good. The lighthouse is huge and visible from a great distance. I am not sure if it can be visited. When I was there, it was closed and it seemed to be occupied by the military.
There is a large sanctuary of St. Mary across the platform. Its exterior has an appearance of a fortified palace rather than a church. Due to its position it was exposed to attacks in the past, so this may be the reason. Inside it is a nice-looking church, but somewhat dark.
The place is well-equipped for tourists. You can have a drink or a snack and there are also a lot of souvenir stands.
Parking is a short walk from the platform.

A peaceful spot with a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a great place to have a coffee and a sandwich while pondering your next move at the end of Italy.

This is definitely worth the drive. This is the very tip of Puglia--where both seas--Ionian and Adriatic, come together. Many tour buses visit this sanctuary, however, it did not feel crowded. Peaceful visit.

Fantastic views out Santa Maria, parking may be a problem in high season. Great relaxing feeling, not a long stop off. You need money for the loo. The light house is stunning but you can't go in!
The steps down are amazing at night, especially from certain hotels.

The place is nice for a real view of the tip of the heel. The church is beautiful however people keep littering all over the hills around the church which is disgusting and a petty to such a nice spot. Super romantic also as we were there during a lively wedding!

At the tip of the heel, this church overlooks the Mediterranean see. Church is pretty basic (Not richly decorated) but it’s location makes it special

This is one of those truly exceptional/inspirational places that it is possible to visit in Italy. It exudes peace and tranquillity.
Take time to wander and enjoy.
There are some magnificent views from the surrounding terraces.
Note: There is limited free parking beside the Basilica.
