The cemetery was beautiful with the German oak trees creating a quiet spot! The Grieving Parents statue is moving- depicts what every parent must go through emotionally losing a child to war. A contrast to the commonwealth graves! We walked through "praatbos" to see the...More

It was so interesting to see the different approach, stones laid flat not upright. It was much darker in atmosphere and visually. The memorial with poppies and one white one was very moving. Well worth the visit, the horrors of the mustard gas and the...More

This cemetery is such a contrast to others in the region and well worth a visit for a more balanced view of the conflicts. It isn't far from the nearest town and is a very peaceful resting place.

Impressive number of German soldiers buried on these grounds. But grief gets a face in the form of the statue 'The Grieving Parents' of Käthe Kollwitz. She worked for 15 years on the statues and they were placed in front of the grave of her...More

Enough parking place around, you can make a walk through the forest around the cemetery. The statue of Kathe Kollwitch is very impressing. You can feel the pain of both the parents about the loss of their son. A must! At about 1 km there...More

I visited this site early in the morning, when the temperature was -2 degrees centigrade. The frost on the ground and in the trees made the experience even more meaningful. Since the First World War, this cemetery has been added to and now holds nearly...More

IT is very impressive to visit this German war cemetery with more than 25000 dead... the sober stone slabs, the big trees and the statues of the mourning parents by Käthe Kollwitz, which even transcend the horrors of the Great War, and show grief on...More

3,633 German soldiers were buried in the Vladslo War Cemetery during and after WWI. Among them was Peter, youngest son of German sculptress, Kathe Kollwitz, who tragically died in the last month of WWI. In his memory she created, in the 1930s, the heart-wrenching sculpture...More

This German grave yard shows how soldiers were stacked 3 or 4 deep in the graves. The names are on the big markers and the numbers are staggering. The tour guide described the slaughter of German school buys who thought they would fight in a...More
