Take a step back in time and discover the Fairfax Station Museum and the role it played in the history of Northern Virginia.

A key element in the development of the regional economy from its completion on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad in 1854, it played a critical role in the American Civil War and was the center of local community life for almost a century until modern highways and rail transportation made local train depots a thing of the past. The Station was an important supply and medical evacuation site during the Civil War where Clara Barton, later the founder of the American Red Cross, assisted in relief and evacuation efforts in 1862 during the Second Battle of Bull Run.

Museum displays, activities and events help preserve local history and promote railroading. Come explore Civil War history, railroading and the fascinating story of our local community.

This historical building houses much of the history of this little part of Northern Virginia including nearby site of Clara Barton's Civil War hospital and memoralibilia of the Battles of Vienna and Fairfax Starion. More importantly it is the home of the railroad museum. Interesting model train exhibit with collectors showing off their price collections. Best the first weekend in... More

This museum is small but has a lot of interesting info. We came for the train festival and loved it. Lots of different kinds of trains to see, super friendly people, and even Santa!

Besides the building that houses photos and history of Fairfax Station, there is a train car, caboose, that visitors are allowed to walk through. There are often model train shows and other events at the museum.

Grandson loved seeing the train as well as all the history in this Museum. Worth the trip. He loved the train and looking into the windows of the Museum as seeing history relics. It was a great day to revisit history.

This museum is the real thing. The station has been moved up hill from the railway in order to preserve it for future generations. The displays evoke the past of a local railway passenger and freight depot, while the building itself is well-preserved, in exactly the state the station would have been in during its heyday. The volunteer staff is... More

The docents at the museum are wonderful and friendly -- and they have a great program for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. You can do the museum in an hour, which matched my young granddaughter's attention span. Truly a hidden treasure to seek out and enjoy!

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us feedback. We do try very hard to provide volunteer opportunities for local scouts as we know the benefit is mutual. Please come back and visit and tell your friends about us! More

My daughter and I had a great time at the museum. Very friendly staff and good displays. The caboose was a lot of fun! Look for special events, we were lucky and they had a Lego train show going on.

Great museum! nice displays showing the local history. Neat information rallying to Clara Barton and her early Red Cross work. While we were there a local N scale N Trak group was operating and allowed my friends son to operate one of their trains. It made a very favorable impression on him. Thanks for a great visit! We were there... More

We took our 9, 4 & 2 year olds for an afternoon with "spring events" and it was great! The dedicated staff had a wonderful art teacher on hand to help the children paint trains, staff teaching how to squeeze blueberries for ink like soldiers used in the civil war and many more fun activities! A neat caboose to walk... More

Interested in the Civil War? Like model trains? Then visit on the third Sunday every month and the first week of December as the volunteers bring together their trains, tracks, and electronics and put on an interesting show for three hours.
