Quiet, green and spacious

The best RV park we’ve stayed at so far in 2 weeks of traveling. Sites are well spaced, quiet and well organized. Huge park which we didn’t have time to explore.

This place gets stale quick
Nov. 2020
Camped here twice this year, Summer/Fall for an extended weekend both times. The campground is nice enuf... Sites are not level but thats ok. The bathhouse to campsite ratio seemed great! and onsite laundrymat.

The lake is more like a pond, and the falls smelled like a fishmarket. Cant speak to the fishing.

The trails... We were drawn to this park because of the trails like most people i imagine. Theyre are hiker only trails. There are directional biker specific trails also along with miles upon miles of gravel. There is a pretty solid pump track with multiple lines - its all really well thought out. The trails should all be considered beginner. Everything could be rolled by someone who has very limited experience on a bike... because of that u get the 'stravassholes' or whatever u call it... who basically sprint the trails and mow down people in the way. Which is fun but it really detracts from the overall experience. Im filing Pocahontas as a flowy XC trail system that was ultimately a waste of a long weekend that would have been better off exploring somewhere else.

Also watch out for the absolute craptacular dog owners who let there dogs off leash and then have a fit because your mad their dog is growling/trying to bite toddlers.

Basically, nice park but 'people ruined it'... Weve aged out on parks like this. If you have small kids learning to ride or riders of limited ability this place might be awesome for you.

We'd stay here again
Nov. 2020
Lots of pull-thru sites, many sites slope to the front or back - a few are pretty level. Site 66 was very downhill. We parked with the motorhome at the very back to be as level as possible and we still had the front wheels 6" off the ground. We had long runs for both water and electric and could not use the awning because of trees. All utilities worked well. Lots of OTA TV stations, and AT&T service was good. Checkin was easy and no touch. Roads were well marked and maintained. Nice laundry $1.00 for wash and soaps available at the vending machine. Bathhouse was clean with individual unisex showers. Wood was on the honor system for $5.00/5 gal bucket, Ten lbs of ice $3.00 at the store or office. Campground host was very friendly with snacks for 4 footed buddies. Dump stations are very easy access. $131.35 for 3 nights with taxes and fees.
Plenty of stores and restaurants on the way to the campground.

Camping and hiking

We stayed here 3 days and truly enjoyed our stay so much. Campsites are spacious and easy to navigate. The hiking trails were so much fun. Wished we had taken our bikes as the roads were paved. It was so peaceful and pleasant. Bathrooms were very accessible and clean . Can’t wait to go back.

Absolutely love this place! My son has taken to trail riding and the park has so many well maintained trails for all abilities! Love blueberry but my son says it’s boring, so we ride everywhere! So much fun and so many trails that you never feel like you are getting crowded as you ride. Just get to the parking lot early on nice weekend days...it fills up fast!

Beautiful Well Maintained State Park
Oct. 2019
Well spaced and level campsites here. Pocahontas Park occupies nearly 8000 acres 20 miles south of Richmond. Lots of great hiking trails, a large pool complex, archery range and even a small museum highlighting the work the CCC did at the park during the late 30's. Great place to relax and catch your breath.

Great mountain biking trails beginner to expert!
Oct. 2019 • Solo
Whether you’re a beginner starting off on fire roads and easy single tract to more complex and challenging trails for experts, Pocahontas State Park has it all! Many of the trails are single direction which is good so no surprise riders.

My favorites are Lakeview 1, 2, 3, Blue Jay Way, Blueberry, Bell Loop.

Highly recommend!

Love to hike and bike at Pocahontas State Park during all seasons especially fall. Cooler temps should never hinder great times and fresh air. Hope to see you there!!

Fishing
Aug. 2019 • Couples
When I first entered into the park I was impressed by how large of an area the park was. I had to wonder if I was still driving through the park. But when it came to fishing , I was totally disappointed. The area to fish had a so called channel that wasn't any wider than casting distance. People were placing canoes in the water constantly and disturbing our fishing area. Nothing but tiny brim two foot from the bank to catch. I asked the guys that were at the boat rental if there were any fish in the lake. The answer I received was nothing but small brim. How disappointing !!!
If you came to walk a trail or maby ride your bike , then I guess the park would be Ok. But I came for fishing and for the $7.00 admission , I sure felt like I waisted my money. I really don't care to catch fish that are no bigger than bait fish .

Felt like we were watched
Sep. 2019 • Family
The park is great. Five stars. But there is an annoying vibe here that felt like we were always being watched. Numerous times park staff questioned us about who was at our camp site. Asking for papers that showed that everyone there actually had the site. And this happened like three times. Park rangers patrolled all the time - it was a little intimidating. They didn’t give us any problem but I saw a couple of sites that they had some problems with. The worst thing I saw was when we were going to see a band at the amphitheater and the guy in front of me got arrested! at the gate because he had an empty beer can in his hand. I heard they arrested him for “cursing” and “Drunk in Public” but he seemed fine when I was talking to him. This police mentality does not belong at a family camp ground
