Many family members of the stonecutters who emigrated here from the Old Country are buried here, and the love poured into the monuments is extremely touching and creative. It seems strange recommending a cemetery as a tourist spot, but Hope is exceptional!

If your visiting the area, yes a cemetery tour may sound odd, pull in and take a walk. The stone work and memorials are beautiful. Barre is famous for it's quarry and stoneworkers and some of their best work was done in memorial to their own. Some other great work in the Montpelier cemetery too.

If you want to experience the beauty and creativity of granite sculpture and the amazing artists who do this work there is no better place than Hope Cemetery. Easy to drive through and see most everything from car but it's best to park and walk about. If you've never seen how granite is quarried and transformed to a work of... More

We have visited many cemeteries and enjoy the stories that we find. Hope Cemetery contains the largest collection of amazing and unique monuments that we have ever seen. Many tell a story of the life of the person or couple. The craftsmanship displayed in the stones is beautiful and often elegant. The variety of monuments in the beautiful setting provides... More

My 9 year olds enjoyed touring this cemetery to see the unusual granite headstones. Look for the automobile, soccer ball, and others. It was raining so we toured from the car. A short drive from Rock of Ages. A short tour. A worthwhile diversion.

We learned about this by chance and were fascinated with the history. We were told that the quarry men who worked in granite quarry knew they would die from white lung so they spent their after work hours carving their own headstones. They are very detailed and intricate and worth the time to see.

This cemetery has some wonderful examples of the workmanship of the people that work in the nearby sheds. Some very unusual art work for the deceased!

A great way to see the end product of the artists at Rock of Ages quarry and processing plant. Worth the time to see real works of art.

After visiting Rock of Ages quarry this is a must see destination. Besides the craftsmanship of the monuments you will see a cemetery filled with the most interesting memorials etched and carved into granite.
