About
The Waco Suspension Bridge is the oldest Suspension Bridge still standing in Texas. Built it 1870, it was the first bridge across the Brazos River. This stunning bridge was built with cables supplied from John Roebling's firm, which built the Brooklyn Bridge. Today, it is a pedestrian-only bridge and is a wonderful place to watch the river roll by.

The bridge itself is a nice walk across the river. However, be careful walking as several planks are damaged and you could easily trip. Beautiful long horn cattle and western sculptures when you enter the park, however we intended to go the restrooms that were dominated by homeless people. It was disturbing to see so many that we walked across the street and utilized the hotel's bathrooms. Amazing that such a beautiful park would be dominated by these folks. City needs to clean up the area so visitors can utilize the facilities.

We found the suspension bridge full of history and beneath the bridge there is the Doris Miller Park with a very nice bronze of Doris Miller who the newest air craft carrier is being named for. The statue was originally in his neighborhood where he grew up and we went there to see it. Thankfully a very helpful librarian in his neighborhood told us it had been moved to the park now names for him. It had another name before that but after moving the statue there it's now named for him. I've enclosed a couple of pictures of his statue you can now visit.

What a disappointment!!! The bridge is totally covered with a tarp and construction surrounds the grounds. I loved the long horned cattle statues. The bathrooms were also closed. I did walk down to the river and took a few pictures. Just wish I could have seen the old bridge!

we next visited the Waco suspension bridge. What great history. The bridge was the first across the Brazos River and it put Waco on the map. opened in 1870 it was on the Chisholm Trail and was a toll bridge.... it cost 5 cents a head to get you cows to the other side. The river here has soft sandy bottoms and stuck and drowning cattle was a problem so the fee was worth it to the cattlemen. Today it is part of Doris Miller Park and has enormous statutes and is a walking bridge only.

It was a walking bridge with wooden planks that some of them were not in good repair. Be careful when walking across. It has a nice view of the river and the other driving bridge. There are some old west statues to view at entrance as well as a walking path beside the river

Well-constructed & sturdy bridge. Has a walkway on either side separate from the main thoroughfare of the actual bridge. Beautiful views on either side, and in front are plaques showcasing the history of the bridge as well as letting you know that it is part of the Chisholm trail. Suspension bridge is easy to get to, has street parking right up front, and has longhorn and vaquero statues adorning the sides of the entrance to the bridge. There is a nearby park with stairs leading down to the river, and space to walk alongside the river with the local wildlife nearby. It's quite peaceful & tranquil. I'd recommend going on the Brazos Tours' boat adventure (something I did last year) and gives you a different perspective of the water and the surrounding cliffs of the Brazos and Bosque rivers.

We were able to walk along the river, but not across the bridge as it is under renovation. There were several homeless people there in the late afternoon. At the entrance you are still able to see the statues for the cattle drive similar to what you see in downtown Dallas/Ft. Worth.

The Waco Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that takes only a few minutes to walk end to end. The bridge is beautiful. and really fun to walk on. The views of the Brazos River, which you're walking over, are gorgeous. The sculptures of Longhorns and Vaqueros at the end of the bridge are big and magnificent. It's worth going here.

This was the prototype for a larger suspension bridge in New York. It is fairly interesting to see how a suspension bridge works, but hardly a tourist destination. It is currently being renovated so access is limited or non-existent.

I liked the area and the well landscaping design.
But the bridge by itself was closed for Maintenance by the time I arrived and I couldn’t take a walk on the bridge but I took so many pictures of the river and the surrounding area.
It was very beautiful and specially the multiple bridges that were built across the river.
It’s a nice place to stay with your family and to discover the history behind the construction of this suspension bridge.

Is it a safe place to go a walk the area? Also how far from the Texas Ranger Museum is it?
Written 10 August 2019
I cannot answer about the distance to the museum. Is it safe ? Well we walked after dark and during the day. The day I felt very safe no issues what so ever. After dark there was a little more unnerving. Not that I felt unsafe but too many people walking around asking for money while there is a certain beauty at night with the lights I would opt for more the day light hours.

Yes. On the street right across from the Hilton.
Written 10 June 2019
Oh yes, I’’m sure your pet would be welcomed on the pedestrian bridge. Its a very nice wide bridge.

I do not see a Hilton Hotel listed here on Trip Advisor. Where is this located?
Thanks
Written 29 May 2018
It is directly across from the bridge and brandin the brazos river statues. It is the Hilton Waco.

Are we allowed to bring a hammock or a picnic mat to take a nap in the area? I'm planning on visiting with a long, outdoor day before heading back to Houston..
Written 6 March 2018
I've seen people using hammocks in the park. As long as you don't damage the trees, and you don't stay past park closing time, you'll be fine.
Written 13 April 2018
I don't believe it is prohibited, but the bridge is constructed of wooden slats and is pretty uneven. It might not be very fun to skate on.
Written 6 May 2017
is there a charge to walk or spend time in the park or area of the bridge?
Written 28 March 2017
No charge, these are free city parks, completely open to the public!

I saw that it is located in the Doris Miller Park. Do you have an address for the Doris Miller Park?
Written 11 March 2017
it is flanked by two parks. Indian Spring Park on one end and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park on the other. There is also the Bledsoe Miller Clubhouse on one side, which is close to the location for the Doris Miller Memorial. So you could say that is between the Suspension Bridge and the Clubhouse. Hope this helps!
