Overview
More
In 1823, Stephen F. Austin established San Felipe de Austin as the capital for his colonization efforts. From 1824 to 1836, this was the social, economic, and political center of the Anglo colonies in Texas. It served as the capital of the provisional government of Texas. Citizens burned the town in 1836 during the "Runaway Scrape" retreat from Mexican Gen. Santa Anna's army. Today, the site shares these compelling stories of Texas' colonial era.

I consider myself a Texas history buff. Visiting was quite a disappointment. Not much here. It is a shame the state hasn't made this more of an attraction. There is a museum coming in a year or two. Worth the 20 minutes and that's about...More

This is a small site off the I-10 highway outside of Sealy. Being a native Texan I was interested in finding out more about the area. I had read that our visit would be 30-45 minutes, but we wound up staying almost 2 hours. The...More

This site makes for a nice sidetrip when at Stephen F. Austin State Park or near Sealy. Informative with some old buildings, an old well or two, and a nice visitor center housed in an old store building from the 1800s. The staff is friendly...More

This small attaction is only 2 miles north of I-10 and is certainly worth the trip if you are traveling between Houston and San Antonio. There is a statue of Stephen F Austin, a log cabin and small museum. It is a good place to...More

Important place in early days of Texas. Nice to see places such as this to tell the story of long ago. Not a big place but if passing b,y or staying at nearby state park well worth the time (less than an hour)

Just passed through on our way to Brenham. Very small historic site but worth the stop if you're in the area or live within 30 miles. I wouldn't drive very far just to see it though. There is the statue, a small obelisk, a visitor...More
