It is the only original building of a university chartered by the Republic of Texas still standing and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been in continuous use for school purposes except for two years during and after the Civil War. The building was then used as a hospital and quarters for Confederate soldiers. Now it is a museum and contains period furnishings and artifacts from its earlier days.

The Old University building is a great place to see what the college experience was like in the 1800's. Half of the upstairs is a homage to when the building was used as a hospital during the war as well. Really interesting and the docent...More

This was the first university chartered by Texas. It's worth a look if you like history. Especially Texas history.

Another great place to visit while you are in Nacogdoches. The two people who were hosting the day were very knowledgeable of all the items on display and the overall history of the building. No charge and lots of information.

Going back to the original university days of Nacogdoches, see what it was like to attend college in the mid to late 1800s. This building is well preserved, and is very impressive. They have rooms set up like they would be when the building was...More

We were privileged to visit and learn about the origins as Nacogdoches College and subsequent uses of the facility. The second floor houses the museum and first floor houses a couple of parlors that were originally used as classrooms for males on one side and...More

Fascinating place. The docents are very informative and friendly. Must visit if in the area. They did a fantastic play about the building's history which was well done. Lots of interesting displays. The building was even a temporary hospital during the civil war.

We were amazed at such advanced architecture for an early Texas setting. Large gothic columns greet you at the front door to introduce the original (magnificently crafted) winding staircase. As a builder and historian, I quickly noticed how restoration methods were impeccable by their use...More

The displays in each room tell stories from multiple time periods, and really give you a feel for what life was like for those who lived there. This is great for kids 8 and up. There is even a schoolroom area.
