Very hot sand hills with no shade. Seems like a fun place for kids, picnic tables are sometimes buried in the sand. You can rent sand discs and other play equipment. There is a store.

I'd advise any time except summer, when the temperatures can get really hot. If you are there in summer, go in the early evening, when it will be cooler. It is fun for a day trip, and generally that's enough. The main dunes... More

We were in a fifth wheel but a lady and several children tent camped across from us. The area was well patrolled by Rangers.

Tent camping is very popular at Sandhills. I think it would be great...obviously check wind conditions for anything unusually high.
