The Tramway du Mont Blanc offered us astonishing views during the trip, both on the way up as well as on the way down. Never a dull moment! We greatly enjoyed the time at the top to walk around and experienced a close view on the Mont Blanc.

If you are staying in St Gervais taking the tram up to ski Les Houches is just a delightful experience. The cost is included in your ski pass. Highly recommended.

Well this has all the charm of a vintage cog railway and is popular in summer. The initial plan is to have a parking plan in place. If you choose to board at St Gervais there is currently no parking at the station as this is currently under construction. As you approach the station is down a small lane on the left, better still when you approach the town turn right and go over the bridge to the Ski lift station here there is a large car park and a shuttle ack to the railway station. Alternatively visit the tourist office in the town to get the same infomation. The sation is attractive and the views are spectacular with several stops for refreashments.

The cog-tram carries you from 580m (Le Fayet) along 12 kms of tram-track through to an elevation of 2380m near Refuge du Nid D'Aigle. What a stunner of a ride. Spectacular views up under the shoulders of the Dome du Gouter (4304m). After watching the alpinists get serious in their work higher up the train reversed back down to Col de Voza(1653m). We got off and walked up to the Hotel Prarion for a beer. Perfect day, blue sky no wind and the best view of the summit of Mt Blanc. Absolutely breathtaking.

The Tramway is another fabulous experience in the Chamonix valley. A pleasant walk from the Prarion gondola station to Col de Voza for a cup of coffee before going up on the Tramway to Nid d'Aigle. Great views of the Aiguille de Bionassy and of the Gouter Refuge way above and over the Bionassy glacier towards the Col de Tricot.

Mountain railways are usually fun, and this one is no exception. Plenty of spectacular views and the occasional marmot to spot from the windows add to the sheer pleasure of the ride. The name is slightly misleading as the summer terminus at Nid d'Aigle is less than half as high as the Mont Blanc summit - and an overnight climb away from it. Operation seems reasonably efficient, but the railway seems shy of the digital age. A small number of tickets are sold on line, and once these are gone one can get the impression that the trains are fully booked - but in fact plenty more seats are available to those who simply queue at the guichet in traditional fashion.

A last minute bus trip from Geneva got us to Chamonix just in time to ride the last cable car (16:30) to the top of Mont Blanc. Not cheap (126 euros), but was well worth it. Talking with a couple who had ridden earlier in the day, they said it was very crowded. Our ride up had 4 couples. Ride back down had 40 +\- people on the tram. First tram gets you to a transfer station at 2,317 meters. Here, the views are amazing and you can watch people parasail off the deck. A second cable car takes you to the top at 3,842 meters in a nearly vertical ascent. Not for the faint of heart.

A very easy way to access the mountains. The little coffee shop at Saint Gervais Les Bains had to serve the best espresso in the entire area

We had a fantastic trip on the TMB this week. You really do need to go all the way to the last stop to get the most out of the experience. The views of the Glacier are incredible from the cafe at the top. Highest loo I’ve ever used on land too!!
