We were on a two-night stopover in Singapore and contacted Ru for his suggestions. He set up a morning session in secondary forests - Draco sumatranus and D. Melanopogon, and Tropidolaemus wagleri were the highlights for me. After a break in the afternoon, we headed to the Pasir Ris mangrove for the evening. Superb views of Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus and Ahaetulla prasina, along with a couple of Cerberus schneiderii, and some sleeping Bronchocela cristatella.

The guides were first rate: enthusiastic and knowledge. I would unhesitatingly recommend, either as a good way to see the best local sites or as an opportunity to get a feel of the habitats and species.

Went on two tours, one for birdwatching in the rice terraces, the second looking for snakes in the bush near Ubud. The tour of the rice terraces was great from a local, with the additional benefit of having local birds identified. At night, we went looking for snakes in a river bed and local forest. Two green vipers were seen right away, ten or so branch snakes, a vine snake, and a rat snake. Had weather been better, I'm told we could of seen cobra and whites tree frogs. The snaking (herpetology) guide was excellent, as well as the birding guide who pointed out many local spice and edible plants. Certainly something no other tour company can offer. Highly recommend.

I had a great time Aaranya Wildlife Odysseys. Everything was very well organised and all the guides we used were great people and very knowledgeable. On this trip we encountered a long list of target reptile species including Komodo dragons, a king cobra, and reticulated pythons. Would definitely recommend!

Going with Aaranya is the best decision we'd made! The trip was well organised, comfortable, and perfect for a group of nature lovers with specific interests. (The food on the boat was also really delicious.) We came to Komodo hoping to see the snakes such as Russell's viper (Daboia siamensis), yellow lipped sea krait (Laticauda colubrina), both green and blue variants of the lesser sunda pit viper (Trimeresurus insularis), as well as birds like the helmeted friar bird and orange-footed scrubfowl, and we managed to see all of the above and more! Our guide, Agus, was a kindred spirit; it was so great to be guided by people who share the same passion and love for wildlife.

We also did snorkeling with Aaranya on our way to Komodo Island and back to Flores, and they were very flexible in accommodating last minute changes to the plans. We were originally going to Siaba Besar to see turtles, but as we have already been there a few days before to dive and we saw many turtles, and one of our group members wanted to see more manta rays, our guided arranged with the boat captain to bring us to snorkel at Manta Point instead. And we saw 2 more mantas to add to our list.

Aaranya also made sure their guests are well-prepared, with a packing list and info kit prior to our arrival at Labuan Bajo. They also prepared a physical copy of the guide book to the local herps for us, which was written by them. It was informative and very useful.

If you want to see more than what regular tours can offer (usually just Komodo dragons, some wild boars and Timor deer), choose Aaranya and you would make the most out of your trip to Komodo. I would choose Aaranya again when I explore other destinations they offer, or if I come back to Komodo again!

Our trip to Rinca and Komodo was a specialized tour focused on reptiles and amphibians. As a herpetologist I was looking for a more in-depth tour than would usually be provided by other tour operators in the region, and Ruchira and his team certainly delivered. I was extremely happy with the level of knowledge displayed by both Aaranya staff and their local guides. I learnt a lot while on the trip and I enjoyed every second.

Logistically Aaranya had all angles covered, and even when disruptions came up (as they tend to do in the tropics) they were handled with professionalism and a sense of humor :)

I have taken many tours in different parts of the world over the years, and I would whole-heartedly encourage people to take a tour with Aaranya, it is guaranteed to be an experience you won't get anywhere else.

Many thanks to the whole team!

Dear Cat, we are very happy to hear we met your expectations and thank you for your contribution in understanding and documenting the herpetological wealth of Komodo NP. Thanks to the efforts of you and the colleagues, the park will soon have its field guide to herps! Thanks again for joining Aaranya and we look forward to having you again. - Aaranya Team

So many wows on this trip! From the lovely staff to the knowledgeable and friendly guide Ajist, to the food, the snorkeling, the organisation, and last but not least the wildlife we saw! Ajist went far above expectations to ensure that we saw all the wildlife we could and to make the trip enjoyable.
I would totally recommend this trip to anyone and would love to do it again.
My only suggestion would be to make it more 'environmental' by providing bulk water (rather than individual bottles) and using paper straws (readily available in Lubuan Bajo), and possibly having some reference books available. However, these things didn't detract from the overall experience.
Thanks Ru, Ajist and crew :-)

Dear Flip, many thanks for the complement and also the suggestions. We completely agree with you. Aaranya's main plan for 2019 is to get our own boat on which we will have a small library as well as have everything logistically possible to make it as environmentally-friendly as possible. We will keep you posted. Thank you once again for joining us and we looking forward to seeing you again. -Aaranya Team

I have just returned from the Dragons and Serpents tour of Indonesia with Aaranya Wildlife Odysseys and have no hesitation in endorsing the operation overseen by it’s enthusiastic director Ruchira Somaweera. His specialist knowledge ensured rich wildlife experiences and the team of local experts (notably Agus Elang and Wayan Sumadi) could not be surpassed. The tour had a clear focus on the herpetofauna of the region and the primary target species (Komodo dragons, Green and Blue Pitvipers and numerous Geckos) didn’t fail to deliver satisfaction. Elements of the tour were customized to provide for the special interests of the members of our small group, for example Scuba diving and birding. The locally built live aboard boat was well-found and luxurious, with friendly crew and delicious food. The overall organization of the tour was superb and all details of pre- and post- tour communication, accommodation, meals, transfers and permits were faultless. I heard about this tour through an academic contact but any person considering a natural history tour in Indonesia (especially with a focus on reptiles and amphibians) should investigate the options offered by Aaranya.

This was a wonderful experience for my wife and I (professional biologists) and our daughter (studying to become and administrator). The guides were very professional, always making sure that we got the most of our opportunities, especially getting to the places while the animals were active and before the the hoards of tourists ticking off the wildlife arrived to ruin the atmosphere. I highly recommend the Aaranya team. The food on the boat (prepared by the captain) even passed the rigorous standards of my gourmet wife and was better (and more authentic) than many places in Bali.

Thank you Ru and Chris for a wonderful five day trip through the Top End. We managed to pack a great deal into the short time - boat trips to observe wildlife at close hand, walks to look at ancient rock art, birding, swimming in a clear rock pool - but we never felt rushed or under pressure. Chris was a great guide, informative, cheerful and considerate. His familiarity with the region and his expert knowledge of its wildlife and natural history made the trip not only a great holiday but also a very rewarding learning experience. A highlight for us was night spotting with Chris for birds and reptiles. We would recommend Aaranya Wildlife Odysseys to anyone with an interest in visiting beautiful, remote places and seeing animals in their natural habitats.

Our trip to Komodo and surrounding islands was fantastic. The trip was well planned and organised with a huge array of destinations, hikes and snorkelling jam packed into only 3 days. We loved exploring Rinca, probably pour favourite Island and seeing the incredible vistas from the high points and myriad of wildlife of various vegetation types as we hiked through. We also loved visiting Manta bay on our last day and swimming with Manta's, an incredible and rare opportunity! And kudos to our amazing guide who showed extensive local knowledge, a warm and friendly presence and passion and love for the local land. We loved it and will remember it for a lifetime.
