The Republic of the Rio Grande(R) Museum is housed in one of Laredo's oldest structures located on San Agustin Plaza in downtown Laredo. The museum is a Mexican vernacular structure, constructed in 1830 with an 1860 addition. It was once the home of Bartolome Garcia, prominent rancher and mayor of Laredo. According to tradition, in 1840, the structure served as the capitol of the Republic of the Rio Grande. The Museum is considered a historic house museum which features displays recreating an authentic c.1830 Home in Laredo.

The building is a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark and a Contributing Structure to the San Agustin National Register District. Along with its neighbors, San Agustin Cathedral and La Posada Hotel, the museum forms a triangle of the most visited historic landmarks in the city.

A small museum with some great things to look at. $4.00 to go in but you have three small rooms to look at. I thought it was educational. I would recommend for smaller groups.

Learned a lot about Laredo and the Rio Grande history. Its a must go if you're in Laredo and appreciate history. Very small but cozy and the attendant is very friendly and courteous , little shop for memorabilia. Great location in Downtown Area.

7 flags flew over Laredo-one for only 10 month. Seeking to duplicate Texas' independence from Mexico, 3 Rio grand provinces declared their's in 1836. They established Laredo as the capitol. Mexico took the area back by force, and Texas was unwilling to come to the aid of the fledgling the Republic of Rio Grande.

There is nothing at eye level to tell you that you have arrived. But, if you look up, you'll see this itty bitty sign. What's presented here is good, but it needs more, a lot more. This "museum" falls into the category of " It's my task to visit every thing that is labeled as a museum". I wish I... More

The Republic of the Rio Grande Museum is set inside an ole home from the the early 1800s. It has many period artifacts set in the three rooms of the house.

Small but very interesting. The museum houses items from early Laredo families. There are also pictures and it is housed at La Posada Hotel.

I drove all the way to Laredo from San Antonio to see the museum. Unfortunately there was a sign in the door stating that they would be right back. We walked around for a half hour waiting and they never did come back so we left due to us paying for parking while waiting. Word of advice ... don't post... More

We were in Laredo for a family wedding and stayed at the La Posada Hotel. The museum is right next door. We arranged to take the historic tour of the San Augustine Plaza and surroundings. Our tour guide, Edwardo, did an amazing job. He is very knowledgeable and our group of seven learned a great deal about Laredo and had... More

You step out of the hot Laredo sun and step back in time. Housed in an old home from Laredo's early days, the museum has quite a few period artifacts.

If you're looking to find out more about Laredo and it's local history, this is the place to start. It's also a great starting point for a walking tour of Historic Downtown Laredo.
