I've been wanting to go here for a long time. A bit of a trek from London, but worth the trip via train/bus (if you're without a car). It's just like stepping back in time (except for the shop and tea room, but understandable). Well preserved, and many of the original items that Darwin worked with are there, including his... More

I didn't know what to expect but as I was passing in the area decided to include a visit and was glad I did. Down House is set in fabulous grounds, I had a very enjoyable visit as not only does it provide a great deal of detailed information about the steps of Darwins life, work and family but the... More

The upstairs is a self guided museum about Darwin's life. Downstairs is an audio tour with rooms recreated as they would have been during his life. The staff were friendly and keen to chat. The gardens are lovely. There is a tea room which we never visited but it seemed very busy.

Down House is a hidden gem in the English Heritage network of wonderful and amazing places. It is the "sanctum sanctorum" for Darwin scholars and aficionados of his life and work. Plan to grab something to eat in the tea room (outdoor and indoor tables), and allow enough time to also see the gardens and greenhouses, and do not miss... More

Lovely house and gardens just into Kent close to Biggin Hill. Can easily spend an afternoon taking in the wonderful displays - including the 'ghost of Charles Darwin' aboard the Beagle, great audio visual and informative panels about his life, his work and his family, Don't miss the walk round the gardens and woods

Our first visit to an English Heritage property as members, and all I can say is future visits have a lot to live up to. Visited with my husband and 7 year old son, and we all found something to delight.. the introductory rooms upstairs gave a great overview of Darwin's life and work, the gardens were stunning at this... Even if you knew nothing about Darwin before you came you would come away having learnt about his voyage, work, family and home life. The staff were friendly and helpful, the museum upstairs exceptionally informative and well laid out and the downstairs beautifully preserved. Highly recommended!
