Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We thoroughly enjoyed taking a look at this historic inn and surrounding grounds. The keeper of the gift shop was super friendly and informative. She gave us brochures on the history of the inn and also directed us to points of interest in town. The small museum offers insights into the history of Castroville. The Medina River skirts the rear of the property and there is an old mill there as well. Very pretty site!

It felt like we were staying with family. Whisper and the gentleman who was working on the grounds made us feel welcome and patiently answered all our questions. Every room was spotless and the beds were amazingly comfortable. Chess boards were provided for entertainment and we enjoyed seeing the deer at twilight and watching the stars from the rocking chairs.

Our first time in Castroville and we are amazed at the unique architecture and age of the homes, for TX. The museum docent was friendly and informative. We enjoyed a walk outside along the river. Unfortunately no tours due to Covid, but a nice stop, especially if you are doing the historic tour through town.

We like historical buildings and this one caught our attention because it was featured in the Daytripper tv show (if you go to Castroville, watch the show before you go to learn about the history). The Landmark Historic Site was very well maintained and the staff member on site was very informative and helpful. The site grounds itself is well maintained and there are several nicely preserved building: The Landmark Inn (now a small museum and a rather primitive hotel where you can spend the night on the grounds), the Vance House (1849), the Grist Mill (1854), but the Medina River that was used to power the mill is dry and there really isn’t much to see). All in all, this is a very well maintained site, but it would interest only those who were very interested in Texas Hill Country history or just wanted a quiet and remote place to escape and spend the night

Amazing experience! Learning about the history of settlers leaving behind their life and moving west and coming through this area gave me a new perspective on life. I can’t to come back and learn even more about this area and the site itself.

The interpretive exhibits are well done and the site offers a great short walking trail along the Medina River and among the historic buildings. The docent on duty offered up great stories and background information on the history of Castroville and the role of the historic inn.

The Landmark Inn State Historic Site is nestled in the historic Main Street of Castroville, Texas. It is located on the banks of the Median River. Back in the 1850’s, the inn, store and mill provided a variety of services to those traveling through Castroville and the settlement.
The inn is a bed and breakfast and provides comfortable historic lodging against a backdrop of serene gardens, red oaks and the Medina River. You can tour the site and enjoy the recreational opportunities that are made available.
The site is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. but closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Fee is $5 for adults, Ages 6-18/Students with Id/Adult Tour Group: $3, 5 years and younger free. School Groups $1 per student (reservations required).
Bring your camera and imagination and don’t forget to visit the rest of the Castroville area. Just a wonderful town all together.
Also, read my comments about Castroville as a city, Sammy’s Restaurant, and the St. Louis Catholic Church.
Hope this information was helpful to you. Enjoy your visit.

We were driving through Castroville & decided to stop & tour some of the local sights. So glad we stopped. Learned a lot about the settlement of Castroville, the inn & the cotton gin.

Castroville is an incredible Texas village. Just outside of San Antonio, it was founded in the 1800‘s by settlers from Alsace, France - and that Alsatian culture and language continue to be deeply ingrained within the village today. Even today there are a significant number of „old timers“ that are Americans that have grown up here but learned Alsacienne and Swiss German as their mother tongue. The Landmark Inn State Historic Site is the single best way for you to orient yourself here: it has a small museum that gives a wonderful overview of the history of this place. And the museum is staffed with amazing, wonderful people who are happy to not only explain the place to you, but to connect you with locals in the community for you to visit. If you are planning a trip to San Antonio, you must plan one to Castroville - and when you come here, the Landmark Inn should be your first stop!
