About
The Steinbach Haus was originally built in Alsace, France between 1618 and 1648 by the Steinbach family. This house is built with pegs so that it is movable. The Steinbach family lived in the house until 1988 when they disassembled it, numbering the beams and putting them in storage. The fachwerk beams were shipped from France to Castroville, TX in 1998, as a gift to the people of Medina County. The Alsatian volunteers came to Castroville and put the house back together, decorating it with furniture that was donated by the Alsatian people and shipped over. Now it serves as a museum and a visitor center for everyone to enjoy.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The lady who spent all the time were wanted explaining the history of Castroville just happened to be there because someone from France had called and asked if there would be anyone there to show them the awesome building. They are normally closed on Thursdays and Fridays. It's such a typical little Alsatian building, from France, and our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the area and the history.

Stopped here to get some information about the Castroville area and had a tour of the house. Interesting story about the house and its occupants. Good stop.

Surrounded by red poppies, this beautiful house is the visitor center in Castroville ,Texas.
The house was brought from Alsace, France ,in the 1800s. Helpful staff, showed us where to find the sights that were interesting.

This cute house was built in France over a period of 30 years in the 1800's. Then it was taken down, numbered, and stored. The people of Castroville worked with the French to get it shipped over and the community reassembled the house piece by piece.

It's free, so it's worth a stop to say hello to the caretakers, take a look around, and learn a little bit about the history of the house, the town, and the Alsace area of France. Although there were originally 3 stories, you can only visit the first two.

The visit will probably take you 10 minutes to look around and 30 minutes if you stop to look at the pictures and information on the visitor's table.

It's a must see if you're visiting Castroville. The building houses the Castroville Visitors Center. It would have been 5 stars if the woman at the welcome center was a bit more welcoming.

Cool story on its construction and a lot of things to see inside for a small house. More like a museum than visitor center.

Enjoyed reading the explanations of how this house was donated and rebuilt. Period furniture helped understand the life in Alsace and in early 1700's.

This charming house, which is now the Visitors Information Center, was actually built in France, taken apart, the beams were brought here, and for four summers, students from France came to Castroville to reconstruct it! Amazing. Much of the furniture in the house was a gift from the people of France. There is a good selection of maps and brochures pointing out other historical sites, and the famous Landmark Inn is a short walk across the street. The second floor of the house is furnished with interesting antiques. There are stairs to a third floor, but they lead to the second floor ceiling!! The docent was very nice, welcoming, and knowledgeable. You probably don't need more than 30 minutes here, but it is an interesting and worthwhile stop. Hubby and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Neat old Alsatian house. The staff were pleasant and it only takes a few minutes to have a look around. It's free, but they have a donation jar to help keep it up. Go when the poppies are blooming!
