About
For most of us, swimming with dolphins is a rare and magical experience, so who better to help you connect with these magnificent creatures than the people who've been making the introductions in Port Phillip Bay the longest? The Muir family established Polperro Dolphin Swims in 1986. Named after their classic, lovingly maintained boat, which is 25 years young, Polperro has led the bay in environmentally responsible dolphin interactions. Judy Muir in particular has been tirelessly active in establishing and improving legislation controlling human interaction with wild marine animals, including dolphins. That's why passengers can't swim up to the bay's bottlenose dolphins, but rather hang on to long ropes trailing from the Polperro's stern, waiting for these often curious creatures to come to them. The rope, and the crew's careful training and supervision of passengers, mean that even non-swimmers can enjoy this exciting experience. People who are initially very timid and reticent about getting in the water leave enchanted by the experience. The Polperro departs from Sorrento pier twice daily from October to April. Passenger numbers are strictly limited so everyone has ample opportunity to get wet, or watch dolphins at play from the deck. Reef and seal swims are often part of Polperro trips as well. These are also revelatory experiences, even for most locals, as the bay's rich aquatic life is a surprisingly well-kept secret. All gear, including wetsuits and snorkels, are provided, and the Polperro has change areas below deck. On chilly days her saloon cabin is warmly welcoming, as is the complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate and delicious scones, freshly baked on board. They're the cherry on top of an inspiring, memorable experience, which saw Polperro enter the Victorian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame in 2001, after winning the environmental tourism category three years running.

Big thanks to the wonderful Polperro crew, Jess, Ben, Tom & Troy for making our dolphin swim, not only remarkable for the close interaction with wild animals in their habitat, but safe, educational and sooo much fun! Our kids 14 and 12 said they never once felt scared - despite the depths (and many stingrays)! I always knew we had extra eyes on them and they have raved about the experience to friends for days. It is an amazing experience, accessible and on our door-step. Swimming alongside dolphins and seals (and seeing the damage that marine pollution and litter can do to the animals) was an extraordinary 3 hours and a must do that I'd recommend to all ages.

Thanks to Troy, Ben, Jess, Matilda, Sophie and James for a fantastic day out on the bay today. I felt super safe and supported while swimming with seals, sighting sea dragons and cuttlefish! The crew catered to ALL levels of swimming experience.
All equipment was provided which adhered to COVIDSafe hygiene practices.
While on the look out for dolphins we were provided a hot cuppa and homemade delicious scones which warmed the soul!
The crew’s passion, expertise and respect for our waters and sea-life is inspiring! I would highly recommend this quality local business as their ongoing contributions and efforts to celebrate and conserve this environment is essential for all to enjoy. Great fun and what a way to end 2020 on a high! pic credit: Laura

You are a brilliant crew.
I bought a ticket for my sister for her 70th birthday. We were a little nervous given it was a bit cool and windy and neither of us had snorkelled for a long time.
My sister and I felt so well cared for, briefed, entertained, informed and fed (fabulous scones) and hot drink at just the right moment!
You're all clearly enamoured of the Bay and its wonders and great ambassadors of this, our precious heritage.
And what a lovely boat.
Loved how you arranged intermittent sunshine and an interesting cloud and light show that set off the moody blues and greens of the Bay.
Very much appreciated.

Your words are poetic. It is a lovely review and perhaps we can't always take credit for the fabulous backdrop of light and colour, we could not be more thrilled that it was also a highlight, appreciated with all other aspects. A girl after my own heart (and age+)
In your words, Very much appreciated.

Amazing tour. We went on a very busy day in the bay, but the staff still made sure we saw dolphins. After a short snorkel with the dolphins we headed to where the seals and gannets hang out and had a long snorkel with them. The staff were so professional and at all times made sure we were safe and seeing stuff, while still making sure we were doing the right thing and respecting the wildlife. Yummy scones were served on the way back as well as a show and tell where we learnt all about the dolphins, seals, gannets and even the history of the bay. Would highly recommend - great outing to show off our wonderful bay.

Not sure why I’ve never reviewed this before as I go out at least 3 times every season!
Personal, friendly and professional service every single time. The crew are brilliant with everyone from nervous, first time snorkellers to experienced divers.
The marine life of Port Phillip Bay is as important as the guests and every trip is undertaken under strict guidelines that put the welfare of the animals first. Seeing dolphins isn’t guaranteed but on most trips, they make an appearance. Sometimes the experiences are out of this world.
Part of the experience is definitely the crew, I always feel like I’ve spent my morning with friends.
I’ve been on the other dolphin boats in the Bay but I rank Polperro as THE best!

My 3rd experience with the crew of the Polperro was as thrilling and memorable as my others because this time I had a 10 year old with me whose smile has never been bigger or brighter! I couldn't be in the water all the time with Lily due to a shoulder injury so Jess and Ben took my place in assisting her admirably. I could relax on deck knowing she was in capable hands having the time of her life as at least a dozen dolphins swam around her.
When it was time to swim with the seals, Jess was my hero! She "towed" me with a life saving ring and I was able to experience the joy of being up close to the joyful creatures. Ben looked after Lily who again didn't stop smiling through her mask!
It was a divine day to be on the bay with such lovely, friendly crew. Thanks to you all, Cheers! Sue

Thank you for returning yet again, you make our days joyous. We often wonder whether the dolphins are more attracted to children as, like Lily, they often get the attention?!!!
See you again, and our warmest regards to you both. We hope your shoulder has by now improved.

It was an experience for my 9-year-old daughter birthday. Just shortly after leaving Sorrento pier we viewed a large pod of dolphin with newborns. We then moved on to searching for seadragons which we found and were amazing to see in the wild. Once all on board, we headed over the Chinamans hat, where are rolled around with fur seals and swam over a large stingray. I was very pleased with the tour, however, what made it an unforgettable experience was personal touch the Polperro crew provided. They addressed everyone by name, the passengers who just came to sightsee were just as part of the group which swam and informed. Anyone who felt a little nervous in open water was buddied up and felt secure. The hot chocolate after the finding the seadragons was most welcomed and the homemade fresh scones were delicious! I recommend Polperro to friends and family for a wonderful experience.

What an unforgettable and wonderful birthday! We are so pleased that it made a 9 yo and her Mum very happy. Nature does that.
Out trips are purposefully small, well under our permitted numbers, as we place the long-term sustainability of our marine life and passenger/swimmer care as paramount. It makes our 'work' each day just as wonderful. Thank you so much for choosing Polperro for the special occasion, and for your kind words

Went with my wife and two visiting (overseas) friends on this fantastic dolphin and seal swim experience in Port Phillip bay. My wife had been twice previously so she wanted us to go again together and we were accompanied by two young newcomers to Australia and snorkelling. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. For me a big bonus was learning more about the critically endangered dolphins in the bay (only 200 members of the species left on planet earth) and the geology of the bay area. We say\w dolphins, seals and sting rays up close. The crew of Polperro are extremely professional and knowledgeable but also really friends and kind. Oh, don't forget the hot chocolate and freshly baked scones!! I highly recommend this trip for a different and wonderful local experience. 10/10!

We LOVED this experience, even if it was freezing cold. There was even a baby dolphin swimming nearby. We were looked after so well by the team, especially my youngest who was taken care off by Jess so I was able to make the most of the trip. The dolphins swam right underneath us, looking as interested in us as we were in them. And to top it off we got to go out and see the seals as well, who are also curious about us. The stingray swimming around at the bottom of the sea was a little bit unnerving, but at least it gave us a story to tell! I recommend this trip to anyone who is anywhere near, make the time, it's so worth it.

I bought this experience voucher for my partner and I and we got to use it during the Australia day long weekend holiday.
We have to say- it was a once in a lifetime, mindblowing, memorable experience and it wouldnt have been the same without the crew at Polperro (Troy, Jess, Tom, Ben, Bonnie). We were warmly welcomed and were given wet suits and they briefed us on all the safety matters. They were knowledgeable on the dolphins, seals, and sea life. They care for the environment and the experience for both the wild sealife and for us. They treated us so well and we felt comfortable and safe throughout the journey.
We saw and swam with so many dolphins who were curious and fun and playful. They are such magical animals and I would definitely want to go back again to see them beautiful swimmers!
Seals!!! Watching them lazing and playing, and swimming next to us was also a great experience. We even saw big stingrays swimming on the bed of the water.
We were so glad that the team at Polperro were less "commercial" and more personable. They truly love what they do, and their passion shines through. I hope that more people experience this through Polperro as we very much so enjoyed every single minute of our time with them, in the water and the dolphins & seals.
I havent got any photos from the dolphins as I was swimming in the water with them! but trust me- you gotta see for yourself!
Thanks Polperro for such a great experience!

'If you love what you do then it's not work', an adage oft used. However, to love and invest in what you love and care for is probably the perfect workplace. The crew feel most fortunate in attracting people who seek out authenticity, so it is a two-way street. You make the tours enjoyable, rewarding and fun. Thank you for expressing such heart-felt appreciation, and for choosing Polperro

Hi, we would like to know if you provide sightseeing trips around Port Philip Bay on any of the days between 1 - 5 May 2018. If so, would like to know the price you would charge for 4 adults and a 2 year old child.

I believe they stop operating at the end of April and commence again in October. I suggest giving them a call to confirm.
Written 5 April 2018
may i know if we can also swim with seals? one of my friends can't swim, can she still swim with a ring and will you provide a ring to her?
Written 29 March 2017
McC Thank you for your enquiry. Polperro offers swimming with seals on each of our trips.
We take purposefully small numbers of snorkelers on each trip and we offer a very high ratio of care. Your friend needs to be confident and comfortable entering deep, cool water with large marine mammals. We are able to assist those with poor swimming skills because our staff are highly trained, qualified and experienced. We don't provide swim rings a buoyancy aids as we do not believe that equipment is ideally suited.
Our wetsuits are thick and provide both buoyancy and warmth, we have buoyant mermaid lines that are used throughout all dolphin swim encounters. However the proper supervision and support from our staff for each participant has ensured that our passengers remain safe and comfortable and well supervised. The snorkelers abilities must be flagged upon booking and again must be made known to our staff on the day of the trip.

Hi, just wondering if I join the dolphin swimming during winter time, would the waters be too cold? And would I be able to bring my gopro into the waters to take photos with the dolphins?
Written 15 May 2016
GoPro is ok. The water is something like 18C. 3-5mm long leaves wetsuit will keep you warm. Hood is not needed.
Written 15 May 2016
Hi, just wondering if I join the dolphin swimming during winter time, would the waters be too cold? And would it be possible to bring a go pro and take photos with the dolphins in the waters?
Thanks!
Written 15 May 2016
I am afraid I must disappoint you with the news that we do close over winter. Weather is variable and often very cold and dolphin sightsings are not as regular as during our season, as they need to search a little further around for food. I do hope we are able to assist at another time. Our season is 1 Oct to end of April.
Perhaps you will still be in Melbourne at the time?
Kind regards and happy travels
PS And perhaps if you are experiencing this blast of cold and windy weather now, you won't be so very disappointed? It has changed considerably from our very prolonged summer!

Polperro Dolphin Swims does not offer transfers but you may like to contact Peninsula Limosenes for pick up and return. Public transport is available by train and bus and takes about 2.5 hours each way, however it is a pleasant journey. Hire car is often the fastest and most cost effective. I do hope we can assist.
