The viewing platform is currently not accessible but there are no signs, just Bailey's rd is blocked off. But you can still get to the lake, turn down salt works rd, about 5mins north of the official viewing platform signs, that will take you to the lake along a good dirt road. We went about 10am and despite not being sunrise or sunset, the reflections and lake were still amazing!

We arrived shortly before sunset, on a still evening when the water was barely moving. We were able to drive to a parking area just a short walk to the viewing location. There was just enough cloud to make the sunset spectacular, and the reflection of the horizon in the lake was unforgettable.

Visited 18 July 2020, constructions taking place at old viewing platform, new parking and toilet facilities being built. Current access by approx 1km walk from old viewing platform to amazing new lakeside jetty, along new firm walking track through the salt pans. Once built, new roadway will allow car access to within 100m of waters edge. Sunset was at 5:36pm with lots of cloud. The sun broke through for a stunning sunset with lots of colour. We stayed for an hour till it was gone. Was windy and waves prevented perfect reflections, otherwise would have given 5 stars. Can see the potential, but you’ve got to be lucky on the day. Clouds and no wind essential for best sunset and photos. We didn’t have gumboots, but they would be great for in water people shots.

It was windy and intermittently rainy while there this arvo but still a lovely time
Much of the walk to the point is underwater now as is the viewing platform
We drove all the way to the end
A local farmer described it as just a stinky lake 😅 but no smells today because of the wind.
No real overt pinkness all around neither - wind, cloud, high water levels have all seen to that.
There were moments though when wind died off or we viewed spots of the lake from a different angle that we could see pink. Or maybe our eyes were playing tricks on us!
We stayed a good couple of hours absorbing it all and thoroughly enjoyed the changing landscape around us as the rain, sun and wind came and went. I did like seeing the lunettes too
Also not another soul in sight while there.
The lady at the info centre advised seeing it in January at sunset on a sunny day for the more picture perfect moments

Come to Lake Tyrell at various times. We came in mid-afternoon, sunset and the next day for sunrise. The lake puts on quite a show and you see it in various lights. Park down at the second car park beside the lake and to get away from the crowds walk to the left along the shore line a couple hundred metres (you'll also find the water levels are shallower here if you want to walk out into the lake - gumboots advised). We found most people arrived about 30 minutes to sunset or 30 minutes before sunrise, however sunrise is definitely a lot quieter. We only had 3 other people with us during sunrise so it was quiet and spectacular to see the amazing sunrise. Lake levels vary, and wind levels vary too o don't always think that the day is always going to be instagram perfect - you're at the mercy of nature.

Lake Tyrrell was a very worthwhile stopover. There has been a lot of work done recently at this attraction - with new viewing platforms and the cleanest public toilets I have seen in Victoria. They have also added a group of large lounge chairs on the lake's edge for nighttime viewing of the stars. Entry to Lake Tyrrell is totally free.
After stopping at the Viewing Platforms be sure to continue driving another kilometre or so down the road - it is well worth it to get up close to the salt lake. The road is unsealed but of excellent quality and easy to drive a 2WD. You might need to wash all the salt deposits off our car wherever you stopover at night. The salt tends to get really tacky on the car duco.

We approached Lake Tyrell via Sea Lake, only to find that the access road to the viewing platform is closed for construction work. Other groups also turned back. We tried to find nearby access points for Lake Tyrrell without success. Check the status of the construction works before going out of your way to visit Lake Tyrell or you may also be disappointed.

My friend and I did the silo art tour and thought Sea Lake seemed like a logical place to stay, and while we were there, we should probably check out the salt lake.... Little did we realize that we were letting ourselves in for the best experience of our trip!
We did sunset Sat night and then were so amazed that we managed to get up for sunrise the next morning (no mean feat!!) Both equally spectacular and both worth seeing.
There were a couple of small ponds that had enough water to get some fantastic shots, but mostly the salt was like concrete. The best thing about sunrise was that we were the only people there!
There are newly installed Sky Lounges, designed so you can lay back and view the sky on clear nights. I can imagine it must be unbelievable! Unfortunately it was getting cloudy on the night we visited so we didn’t get to experience the clear night sky.
Good to know that there are brushes to scrape the salt off your shoes beside the car park - we didn’t see them at night, but spotted them in the dawn light! Great idea!!!
Also - be aware that it’s windy out on the lake, and the wind can be cold, so dress appropriately!

The main road into the lake ended at the viewing platform due to construction of a new facility at the lake which was disappointing. Some six km further north on the Calder you will find Salt Works Road that takes you right into the lake for the full experience so all was good. A remarkable place and a must see if passing through Salt Lake.

Hi we plan to visit about early Jan? Is it worth the visit. When is the lake at it pinkest hue? Thanks

I’m sorry, I don’t know. Maybe ring the hotel or Newsagency in town and ask them ..... or google your question
Written 16 November 2020
good question!
best conditions: water and zero wind.
We were there on the weekend June9th and there was water and no wind during a sunrise and sunset and it was just brilliant. The last day was a bit windy and it started to resemble a normal lake., but we had brilliant clouds, rays of sun and a distant storm. We are determined to go again with friends. Ideally you want wind free days for the purest mirror images, I regard spring as the windiest time of year, year in year out , so there would be a risk there. Summer maybe it's too hot and depleted of reflective water. Autumn is the finest weather with the best chance of little wind but may still be too dry without rainfalls for a good while. So perhaps winter for the combo of more water and less wind.
HOWEVER! if you could go at short notice with a look at weather/wind conditions, if they are good, then spring might be ideal as there would be most water.
take rubber boots or shoes with grip that you can wreck.

I don’t think there is any issue if you take dog. Open, wild and isolate place. We were the only one when we went there both at the sunset and at sunrise.

Hi, James. What would you like to know about this attraction? Was there much water in the lake when you were there? Thanks, James
Written 5 September 2018
Yes James there was plenty of water in the Lake it is always shallow though ... our guide said it only ever gets to a foot deep in parts. you hire gum boots from the Tourist Information Centre and walk in/across the Lake..
Written 8 September 2018
The attraction of Lake Tyrell is the very shallow bit where you can just walk on the very very thin layer of water - thus the place is famous for reflective photography!

I would like to know about anyone's swimming experiences. Also has anyone any theories about why there are so many flies?
Written 29 March 2018
Don’t think there’s much chance for swimming as we walked out about 300 metres , bit slushy in places, maybe after some heavy rain ?? As for the flies ...... not a problem at dawn or dusk. Enjoy !
