- Brian S4 contributionsBest in Class Muscat produced from knowledge direct from the winemakers-Do it at home.As a longtime customer of Stanton and Killeen, and an annual visitor to the winery, I entered the Class 3 Muscat category of the" Liquid Luxury amateur" competition in September 2023. I had purchased an Oak Barrel 23 Liters size) and basic muscat material in 1996 and kept it up to date in an amateur way for 25 years, with regular references to the winemakers at S&K, including testing of a sample of the muscat each 2-3 years, I would get advice each time to be caried out to keep the Muscat up to the mark. My entry was more of curiosity as to how it was as a standard compared to other entries. I won the best class 3 Muscat, and the best Muscat in the show with a Top Gold Medal and a score of 97 points. I also am a member of the Port club and enjoy Topaque as well.Hi Brian, Congratulations on your remarkable win in the "Liquid Luxury Amateur Wine Award Show"! Your 25-year journey with your Muscat barrel, resulting in the best Class 3 Muscat with a Top Gold Medal and 97 points, is truly outstanding. Thank you for being a part of our Port club and a valued S&K customer. We look forward to celebrating your win with you the next time you visit us in Rutherglen! We had ordered a grazing platter of cheeses, meats, olives and fruit along with a generous array of bread and biscuits. It went down very well with their Rose and Chardonnay. The staff were very friendly and helpful and I highly recommend this place for a great experience.Thank you for sharing your experience at Stanton and Killeen Winery, as a small business it means so much to us! - Hugary1Sydney, Australia8,219 contributionsStanton & Killeen WinesWe were doing our own tour of the area with me as designated driver. These wineries we went to were all very interesting and offered and range of wines etc to taste. I did try the muscat here as it has been a favourite of mine for 40 years. The blonde short haired lady dealing with us was terrific. Great explantations and patience servicing us with the various wines. For me the best place for Muscat. They also have a range in 5l glass flagons which is very good. A place not to miss.Thank you for your visit and for sharing your experience! We're thrilled you enjoyed our Muscat and found Sam's service terrific. We look forward to welcoming you back soon for more tastings. The Iberian Wine Tasting features the Portuguese wines they are famous for. It offers an education in these wines, so good that we have repeated for the last 3 years because every vintage is different. It is conducted by very friendly and generous staff who are more than happy to answer all questions. - Michelle SMelbourne, Australia1 contributionAbove and beyondStuart treated us to a degustation of wines and fortifieds, and an unforgettable experience. A master conversationalist, Stuart sent us home with book recommendations, a revelation of a recipe for leftover risotto, a short course in local history, and many, many wines. Everything on tasting was delightful. We especially loved the rose and sparkling shiraz durif.Hello Michelle, thank you for your kind words and your lovely review - we'll be sure to pass this onto Stuart! We had a great tasting, the wines were great and even better one of the best hosts we have ever had at a winery. Stuart really knew his stuff and was fun to deal with and you could tell how much he loved his job. Yes, we left with various bottles of wine and will return.Hello Michael, thank you for your kind review. This winery had some interesting Portuguese-style white wines. They also had some very good reds, but overall we felt their offering was a bit over-priced.
After tasting a few of them, my wife and I (who had only a small amount of wine, sharing my tasting portions), decided to leave, telling the server we would not be buying anything this time. He then requested we pay a $10 tasting fee. I am aware of, but disagree with, wineries charging for tastings, and particularly choose to visit those that don’t charge. There was no statement about a charge at this winery, either on their website or visible in the tasting room.
I am glad we chose not to purchase from this greedy establishment, and suggest that future visitors beware! (We grudgingly paid the fee.)

Just a little comment for what it's worth. I've been to a lot of wineries and wine regions over the years, in Australia and Europe. The Barossa, Hunter, Penola, McLaren Vale to name just a few. I was at Rutherglen last weekend, driving up from Geelong and on friends recommendations went to Campbells Winery first, was so impressed by their wines. I then went across the road and to Stanton & Killeen's to see what was on offer. Met at Cellar Door with a sign that advised that there was a surcharge of $10 to wine taste refunded on purchase of their wines?? Seriously?? If your wines are any good, you really don't need to charge someone to taste your wines, let your wines speak for themselves, needless to say, I didn't do any tasting with Stanton & Killeen's. With covid and travel restrictions you would think any industry would welcome visitors, obviously not at Stanton & Killeen's, the Campbells Wines carpark was packed, wonder why? I spent $200 on their wines, I'll never know personally how good their competitor across the road is because of a $10 surcharge, sorry I just don't get it. I voted with my wallet, don't know who runs your winery but a suggestion lose the surcharge if you don't want to lose cash business.

This winery is all class, not because it's done a multi-million dollar renovation but because the people there honour their heritage and love to make excellent fortifieds. Their better muscats have decades old muskat blended in, and their vintage ports are comparable to the best from Portugal. Even the cheaper muscats are fresh, lively and utterly delicious. Their special events should not be missed.

Nearly didn't visit here as the last time we visited the experience was just average (but the wines were great). This time we brought some friends with us and we all agreed the experience was excellent. We arrived just after they opened and had the place to ourselves for most of the time we were there. Very friendly and attentive staff. I ended up becoming a member, so I look forward to my first delivery when it comes. The fortifieds were the standout, but the table wines were equally delicious, with a range to suit every budget. Certainly worth a visit.

Been to Stanton & Killeen twice in the last six months and have found that the experience was outstanding mainly due to Zalan. He is very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. We joined the barrel club on the first visit and received an analysis of the port in our barrel at the time. With his and the excellent winemakers advise the port in our barrel is now much improved and maturing well.
We have also tried and bought a few of their white wines, especially enjoyable is the Portuguese grape varieties. Would highly recommend a visit to Stanton and Killeen.

We had a great time here with Bob. He showed us the barrel room and gave us some information on the events coming up in the winery. There is interesting history at this winery and the cellar door oozes with the passion. If I lived locally this would definitely be one of my faves. I will have to save it for my next visit from Melbourne!

Stanton & Killeen has been around for over 145 years. The family tradition of winemaking continues with the mother and daughter team Wendy and Natasha KIlleen at the helm. Stanton & Killeen are best-known for their fortified wines, in particular ports based on Portuguese grape varieties, The Muscats, Topaques, and Vintage Ports are much sought after. The traditional gutsy Rutherglen reds are a specialty. Stanton & Killeen has survived phylloxera, the Depression and two World Wars, and it seems the will survive for a long while to come. Stanton & KIlleen are one of the best-known wineries in the Rutherglen region.
