About
Lake Mountain is Melbourne's closest and most affordable alpine resort, just a 120 kilometre drive from Melbourne. A year round destination for the entire family which during the winter months offers over 37 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, toboggan slopes and plenty of snow play areas. During spring and summer enjoy exhilarating flying fox rides, laser skirmish, challenging mountain bike trails and enchanting mountain walks. The Resort provides skiers with the opportunity of learning new skills in a relaxed, fun environment. Our ski school provides both the young and the young at heart with professional ski instruction. Enjoy an intimidation free experience! We offer ski clothing and equipment hire on site over the winter months so there is no reason to not enjoy the diverse experiences that the mountain offers. At the end of an active day enjoy majestic mountain views, local seasonal food and hot and cold beverages at the licensed Cafe or Bistro.

The Cafe has been re launched, as a specious Air conditioned space, the perfect place to buy ice cream and coffee after riding up the hill on a sunny day.

Amazing for families and first timers. Great price for entry and hire of items. Friendly staff and cafe to suit most taste buds. This is a must for families.

Told we absolutley would not be allowed to enter the resort at all without a Covid test within 72 hours, which we bent over backwards to get, and then we’re never even asked to show them. I don’t mind getting the test at all, but to be told we’d be turned away without them and take extra time off work to get them just for them not to be needed was insulting. My husband and I were taking turns to take our 2 year old down down the toboggan run but you have to pay for 2 magic carpet passes even if you are only using it with one child- it should only be a cost per child if the kid is not old enough to use it by themselves!
Staff did nothing to stop people who were doing all the things posted on the boards that they shouldn't be doing- standing up on toboggans etc which made for multiple nasty collisions and unsafe conditions for small children even when supervised by adults.
The cafe was disorganized with no clear instructions on the fact that you have to pay for coffee in one spot and then take your receipt to the barista to actually order. I ordered coffees and the staff asked me if I wanted my receipt, so I said no to save paper, only to walk straight over to the barista and be denied service because I didn’t have the receipt?! If I had ordered coffee why wouldn’t the cashier tell me I needed my receipt to actually order it?! Not to mention staff were walking around with masks on their chins the whole time inside the cafe.
The mountain is an ok experience, but that’s a real shame as it should- and could- be a great experience. The dedicated toboggan hill for young kids to toboggan and manic carpet are excellent and Marysville itself is lovely! Unfortunately the staff at Lake mountain resort itself leave a lot to be desired, which can make or break an experience at this place! Next time we’ll just drive a bit further and go to Hotham!

People pay to get in, book in advance and do the right thing by following the Covid rules only to be treated like animals by the rude staff.Terrible customer care and rude staff who are not abiding by the government's guest number protocols and creating their own rules. The cafe had a limit of 100 people at a time but with even 10 people inside at 3pm, the staff was literally chasing people out in an extremely rude fashion. Not visiting this place again. Better visit Baw Baw or Hotham. The staff at the cafe needs some training in customer care, they get paid right? an people pay to visit this place right?

This was our second trip to Lake Mountain, the first being about 8 years ago.
Things that have improved: there is now a safety net at the end of the toboggan run preventing kids flying off the end into the little river (this happened to our 5 y old last time we were here so thanks for the safety improvement)
That is all I can think of for improvements. Everything else has gone south since!
In particular, the food available for purchase is foul. Fried, low quality chips + fish or nuggets. Although they advertise other items, none were available/ staff were not prepared to make a toasted sandwich.
Also remember to take enough drinking water for the day! They STILL have not come up with a solution to provide free, safe/filtered drinking water at the resort. But then why would they when they sell bottled water for $3.50?
But the thing that makes this place the most disappointing is the staff who patrol the toboggan runs. Instead of installing a sign to tell people not to stand at the end of the run to take photos or videos of their kids, they continuously shout at people to move away. I stood in the "safe" area off to the side and watched this happen all day. One senior staff member was inducting another on this day and told him "you literally have to repeat this ad nauseum all day long" and then proceeded to show him the rude and patronising manner in which he was required to hurry people off the run. Perhaps it's time for a rethink of this approach?!
In 4 unenjoyable hours for my children, they were told off 20+ times for tobogganing too fast, tobogganing out of control (!?), not getting out of the way of others coming down, walking on the tobogganing run (um, how would you like us to get off the mountain if you fall out half way down? Somersault?).
Put up a sign. Give people instructions when they enter/buy their tickets and then leave people to enjoy themselves!! Our children gave up trying to toboggan to your liking and we went home!!

Well run resort, great staff, plenty to do even during summer. We took the easy hike, about 20 minutes up, to one of the summits. Great views when the clouds finally decide to move on. Steep in some places but well worth it.

Hi.. I will be in melbourne in sept and wondering if there will be enough snow for snowplay and tobagganing for the kids around 5-10th sept? What will be the entrance fee during that time? Will it be cheaper after winter season officially over. Thanks

Its hard to say. The season is usually finished by the but it changes year to year. There wasn't supposed to be any snow when we went there.

We are thinking over travelling Melbourne cbd to mountain alpine? What is the best way to get there as we have never driven in snow before? Is there a bus to there or a tour that would interest children. Thanks WA

Last time we went we stayed at Marysville caravan park.. it's pretty much at the road that takes you up to lake mountain. On talking with the staff at the caravan park it is very rare that people have to drive up with chains. If you call the caravan park they have all the details for lake mountain.

Is lake mountain good for snowboarding?

Yes in August, when on a day visit from Marysville, enough snow cover at a large well posted and supervised gentle slope, plus a steeper slope further away. Getting to both walking was but can be slippery and no rail supports so get the proper boots.

It's all good. Make sure you check the weather condition forecast and also have tyres chain handy.
Cheers
I am planning to go for a trip with my family on 4th Jun and probably put up a night. The main attraction is ofcoz to experience snow especially for my daughter. Do you think we will be seeing snow since it's just beginning of winter?

I noticed it is supposed to snow Friday 25th May, so not sure if it will be snowing to the 2nd June. This will depend on the weather. Just keep an eye on the weather forecast.

My husband and I will go to Lake Mountain in August with our 2 kids. We have booked hotel in Marysville and plan to take the snow bus to LM in the early morning. Seems that there has only 1 bus departs at 10:30am, but we want to go to there at 9am. Does there any other transportation can go to LM from Marysville?

I’m not sure about public transport. We drove up in our car. If you contact LM directly I’m sure they’ll be able to help you. Have fun in August ⛄️⛷

its a long way to go without any guarantee of snow. i wouldnt do it. better off going to a better snow resort like mt buller. no guarantee of any snow at lake mountain. cant go by weather reports very unreliable. direct coach from melbourne to good snow results a little further i know but soooo much better very good for toddler's.
