About
The Ritchie Family are excited to share their new cellar door and dining room. They have been farming at the base of the Victorian High Country for over 140 years. Over 50 years ago, Vivienne and Robert Ritchie established the Delatite Winery. Their son, David Ritchie now runs the winery. The new cellar door will allow you to have a relaxed tasting while sitting around a fire taking in the views. Locally sourced food and produce is at the centre of our seasonal menu. In summer you can spill out onto our deck, lawn and outside tables while sipping on a delicious glass of wine It is rated amongst the top 3% of wineries in Australia and has been rated five red star winery by James Halliday since 2009.

Delatite Delights is a wine tasting experience matched with small “bites”. Of the 5 wines we sampled, I found the 2022 Estate ‘Pet Nat’ the most interesting and different from other, perhaps more traditional, wines. The artisan bread and dukkah was a good way to start the tasting and all the other bites were delicious too. I would recommend the Delights as a pleasant way to try out some of the many wines that Delatite has on offer. However, some may find the price, at $60 pp, a bit high.

Excellent food, beautiful outlook and great decor. There is a terrace menu with small plates, large plates or platters or a set menu at $80 for two courses or $95 for three. The terrace menu has a platter that I thought was overpriced at $80 about a third of it was bread. The dishes we had from the set menu were delicious, especially the leek tart !
The wines were very nice. I would love to see a degustation with matched wines. I’d definitely go back for that . I think you will have to book very early once the weather gets colder because there’s not much room inside…

This winery is in a lovely setting, with a modern and very attractive cellar door and restaurant. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. They have an interesting range of wines including some red and white blends. We restricted our tasting to the Estate range - while it is reasonably priced, there is nothing cheap. The food in the restaurant was very good - at $80 for 2 courses it is relatively expensive but this is the only negative comment I would make. We totally enjoyed the tasting and dining experience and departed with 6 bottles of wine.

I visited the winery with 4 friends over the weekend and unfortunately came away disappointed. The setting and views from the winery are beautiful however overall the experience was not a good one . The lady in charge was quite rude and when we asked if we could have some steamed wine glasses to enjoy the bottles of wine which we had bought, we were told that only the inside diners were allowed those glasses for safety reasons . I understand that it isn’t a huge issue but when you go somewhere for lunch and spend a considerable amount of money , I would expect management to be a little more compromising , There was also a considerable markup on the cost of wine from the cellar door to the table cost at the winery ( $30 extra to have it at the winery per bottle ) . That is a big corkage price per bottle ! Especially when you consider we sat down to a lunch for 5 people )
Also once seated at the outside table I had booked , we were told that the full menu was only for the inside restaurant and that there was a smaller limited menu for outside . It would have been good to know that at the time of booking .
Except for the manager, the rest of the staff were wonderful , courteous and helpful but overall the female managers uncompromising attitude left us feeling that we probably won’t return .

We went to Delatite Winery for a wine tasting. We were told that we could not have any share plates at the wine tasting table unless we went to the restaurant which was 5 feet away from where we were sitting wine tasting. We asked to see the menu and found that the very same wines that we could purchase at the cellar door were 5 feet away in the restaurant double in price. We declined to move to the restaurant and will definitely NOT be going back. Talk about highway robbery.

Hi Emma,
I have responded to your review on google but wanted to respond to you again here to help explain the reasoning behind some of the things you mention in your review.
I'm sorry you were disappointed with your visit to our winery.
We have a policy that we don't serve food in the cellar door as we want our visitors to concentrate on the wines. We will always be a winery first which is why we want them to be the priority in this space.
Our current wine pricing in the dining room is less than standard restaurant prices. If you were to find the same bottle in any restuarant in Melbourne it would cost more than what we sell it in ours.
I hope this explanation helps you to understand why the pricing is what it is and why we don't serve food in our cellar door.
Kind regards,
Polly Ritchie

Sadly very disappointed. This is a nice looking restaurant with great wine tastings available on its own or before lunch.
The problem for me is the menu. Very very few options if you want to order something that you want and your partner does not like, Or if you’re on your own.
And may I say very next message. I totally understand restaurants making up for revenue post Covid, but the dish we wanted suitable for two people was sold out, and the next cheapest dish was $120 for two+ people. Our chocolate dessert was delicious. Expensive to drink here too at roughly $20 per glass.
You’ll enjoy it here but I will enjoy it more elsewhere.

Hi Alex,
Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the wine tasting but I'm upset to hear you didn't enjoy the menu.
Our menu has changed a lot in the last 12 months since we opened our new building. This was originally because of COVID restrictions but now has been restricted because of staffing levels.
I am sorry that the main dish you wanted was sold out when you visited. We have since changed the menu (last weekend) and it has a larger selection of both small and large plates on it.
You weren't the only person to comment on our wine glass pricing and we have recently updated the prices.
Our new pricing for wines by the glass range from $14 (Estate whites) to $26 (Reserve Block wines) .
We hope you will give us another chance and visit again soon.
Kind regards,
Polly Ritchie

The new cellar door and restaurant sit with a wonderful view of the valley. The ambience is good. However, the restaurant windows have become a trap for a collection of bushflies who managed to constantly interrupt the meal. A suggestion regarding the removal of the flies was waved off.
We chose the fixed menu which was pleasant without being a standout. The Delatite wines were equally pleasant but a little on the expensive side. Perhaps my expectations of lower pricing versus full restaurant pricing to encourage sampling was misplaced.
We wanted to rate the experience higher based on the new building and the enthusiasm of the owner/staff, but felt that the experience fell short of expectations. Perhaps as they settle in the quality of the product and the experience will lift.

It would be no stars if that was an option as we were turned away. We were two couples looking forward to a having a few bottles of wine overlooking the surrounding landscapes and possibly purchasing hundreds of dollars worth of wines when we left. Instead were told we could not even buy a bottle of wine at the bar and sit at the many empty tables available. What a crazy way to run a business. A real shame as we had travelled over 30 minutes to enjoy a few hours at their winery and spend hundreds of dollars.

Hi,
I'm sorry we weren't able to serve you when you visited us in early January.
The two weeks after Christmas is our busiest time and over that time we had some people who said they would work pull out at the last minute.
Our policy is to always ensure the people who have booked and are being served have the best possible experience. As a result we sometimes limit the amount of people who can dine, drink and have tastings and encourage people to always book before coming.
We understand the disappointment, especially as we are 10 minutes out of town and at the end of a long dirt road.
We hope you give us another chance and if so, encourage you to make a booking before you come.
Kind regards,
Polly Ritchie

We visited with friends who live in Mansfield and it was refreshing for a Hunter Valley couple to explore a different winery. Our personalised tasting started with a young cellar door staff member and quickly escalated to the cellar door manager and eventually the winemaker as we showed our interest in and knowledge of wine. Very well handled and great information. The wines were very good and the Gewürztraminer was a star with very different flavour profiles to most Australian white wine. A very good selection of reds as well. We bought a few and stayed for lunch (make sure you book) which was excellent. Great flavours and presentation. A thoroughly enjoyable visit and we hope to return some time.
