My friend and I recently traveled to Melbourne for the Aussie Open tennis tournament, but we made the very wise decision to take an overnight trip to the Yarra Valley for wine tasting. We booked a private tour with Yarra Valley Winery Tours and we could not have been happier with the experience. Our tour guide David picked us up promptly at our hotel (the Balgownie Estate - also highly recommend). David was welcoming, friendly and, most importantly, extremely knowledgeable about the Yarra Valley and its glorious wines! After getting a sense of our wine preferences, David personalized the tour for us, taking us primarily to his favorite smaller "boutique" wineries. We began our day at Chandon (not boutique, but still great fun) for a "Splash Tasting" of bubbly. We knew we wanted to try this one out and David smartly brought us there first because he knew it would be crowded and less pleasant if we went later in the day. As a result, we received immediate attention and enjoyed a host of delicious sparkling wines at a leisurely pace. We then journeyed on to several smaller and utterly charming wineries, including: Soumah, Steels Gate, and Yering (well, this one was actually pretty big and a bit more commercial, but the property is beautiful and we still were able to walk right in and taste their lovely wines without delay). For lunch, we went to de Bortoli where we did yet another tasting while our meal was being prepared. The lamb gnocchi was fantastic. In total, my friend and I reckoned that we had sampled at least 40 (!) wines by the end of our wonderful tour. And we filled David's trunk with the ridiculous amount of bottles we purchased throughout the day, in addition to the case that we ordered to be shipped back to the States from Soumah (which I think was my favorite of all, but a very close call). It also helped that David knew which wineries were closed on certain weekdays and he was friendly with the staff at all of them. Side note: if you do a wine tour in Australia, do so on a weekday! We happened to do ours on a Monday and it felt like we had the Valley all to ourselves, which made the experience all the more unforgettable. This tour was absolutely a highlight of my first ever trip to Oz and I can't recommend it enough. Oh - it's also a super easy (less than one hour) drive from Melbourne to the Yarra so penciling in a wine tour is no sweat at all. I'm not sure if this particular tour company does pick-ups in Melbourne, but either way you can get yourself out there and, when you do, be sure to ask for Dave!

Met Christian and the other intrepid wine explorers at Melbourne Town Hall and headed off to the Yarra Valley. Christian provided some great ‘wine’ insights on the way and took us to some amazing wineries, along with a cheese and chocolate stop. A fabulous day out was had by all explorers and we headed back with our Yarra Valley goodies! Thank you Christian for an enjoyable and informative tour....

I went on this tour on Thursday with a friend who had come down from interstate. We were on the tour with a lovely couple from the UK who had migrated to Melbourne. This made it feel almost like a private tour and meant plenty of space on the bus to spread out.
Our Driver/Guide Ian provided insight into the YV area and great conversation.
The company itself have really put a lot of time into curating the tour and picking out the best wineries with the friendliest staff to visit.
I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone. It is a great day out to relax and spoil yourself, you even get to visit a chocolatier!
Thank you Yarra Valley Winery Tours!

Left Melbourne CBD at 8.45 am on an air conditioned mini bus with our guide Gary
What a great day ! Gary was very knowledgeable about the Yarra Valley in particular. We were entertained and informed on the drive into the Valley about the history of the region and various wineries and how they came to be! It was a non stop festival of food and wine visiting a produce farm a number of wineries including a relaxing lovely lunch at Rochdale winery. After a very informative tasting at Yering Station (great wines) we ended up at The Chocolatiers eating too much chocolate !
A relaxing trip back into Melbourne CBD .
I highly recommend Gary as a guide and this gourmet tour is #1 in my book !!

We hosted a corporate event with international guests from Sri Lanka and travelled to three wineries, finishing with antipasto pizza lunch at Killara Estate.
The tour was fantastic. Our guide, Dave, was so friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating to our group. We had more than enough time at each location and the wine tastings were informative and unique to each winery. Dave also kindly organised an impromptu visit to a local dairy for us to sample some cheese at our request.
Our guests had a great time and we would definitely recommend it.

Sarah has been so lovely to work with in arranging a team building day. She helped us plan our day with her comprehensive package deal lists which made things very easy. She incorporated all our favorite requests in the deal. Our Driver DD was wonderful and chatty and full of great information about all wineries. It was a lovely day in the yarra valley for our NZ and OZ team together.Thank you for a great day .. Regards Bhavika

We did the Yarra Valley winery tour from Melbourne with Lunch and Chocolateria. Traveled with my adult daughter (26). Had a great time. Tour guide was Ian. Personable, friendly and professional. Group of 7 + Ian. Van can hold 13 but enjoyed not being crowded and leg room! Visited 4 wineries. Great views along the route. Got to see kangaroos. Full day tour 9:15-5:00. We enjoyed our travel companions, an international group. First stop was Rob Dolan winery - beautiful! Great wines. Lunch at Roche winery was fabulous! Did not expect it to be such great quality! A gorgeous winery! Helen’s Hills was comfortable and beautiful. Helen & Joeys fun photos on unicorns and stunning vistas. Choclateria was good. Glad we went on a weekday in the autumn. Perfect weather and smaller crowds. Ian was a great guide!

Awesome tour with a great driver, Andy! I really appreciate to him for giving me a wonderful day. During this tour, we luckily met kangaroos as well! The first winery, Coombe farm, was beautiful and got very nice funny lady. Thanks to Kelly. Lunch was so delicious. The last winery, Helen&Joey, has the most peaceful views. You made my day, Andy! Thank you so much!

My husband is in a wheelchair - are there any wine trips we can go on? Lyn P.

Hi Lyn. The wineries we were taken to were all easily accessible with car parks very close to the buildings. I can't recall if our minibus had wheelchair facilities but there are certain to be those that do. A phone call will soon confirm. Good luck, it's worth the effort.
