Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The town went from riches to deserted in a short time, so no one could be bothered to replace or renovate the old buildings, which were built to last anyway. There are so many churches and public buildings, plus old banks and shops. Most are being repurposed.

You step back in time as soon as you lay eyes on the Clunes streetscape. Filled with quaint and old buildings, this town has been lovingly restored and maintained by the wonderful locals. Used for feature films and TV series as a backdrop for period productions, this town is simply charming. Of course it has all the mod cons as well, beautifully hidden behind the Olde World charm of the mid to late 1800’s.

We arrived to see the first Agricultural Show in 3 years but unfortunately it was washed out. However we then had all morning to wander the streets of Clunes taking in the history and sights around the town. It is well worth visiting - a step back in time.

Carisbrook Historical Society members made a booking to have a local guide open and show us around the former Clunes Town Hall, Court House and Free Library buildings and over the site of the former Port Phillip Goldming Company. We were most impressed with the locals' energy and commitment to restore these buildings to their former glory and to observe the remnants of the structures and sites of the former enormous mining company.Well worth booking a tour.

You can see why it was used in the 2003 Ned Kelly movie with Heath Ledger in the starring role. Clunes was the site of the first gold discovery in Victoria in1850 (announced in 1851) and the post office was opened in 1857. By 1880's it had a population of 6,000 or thereabouts. The buildings are therefore old and mostly have historical plaques. The are also a number of Ned Kelly descendents or perhaps it was their beards. The street now houses a number of bric a brac stores and some restaurants.

We detoured to see this town on a quiet Monday morning. Nostalgic. Most of the shops were closed but Widow Twankey’s was doing good business with the outdoor tables filled with coffee lovers. Bought some old-fashioned lollies in the sweet shop. Clean toilets in the park.

Fraser street Clunes is one of the most intact Gold Rush era streetscapes in Australia. A great little town to visit.

Clunes is mostly a heritage-listed town dating back to the gold rush days.
I love the character of this old town with many still original storefronts.
You can imagine you are in an old western movie set but this is real.
This is my second visit to this lovely old town.
Some worthwhile buildings to visit include the London Chartered Bank (1871) and Italianate Post Office (1878)
I enjoyed Widow Twankey's which has a collection of the older style lollies and chocolates and O’haras serves up a nice coffee.

I spent half a Sunday on my own in Clunes and loved every minute of it! From the many bookshops, to the Farmers Market in the main street (second Sunday of each month), and the fascinating architecture everywhere, there was so much to absorb. The Clunes Museum offered intriguing insights into the town's history - including the first gold strike in Victoria. The ceramics exhibition was a real bonus, and I would love to be there in May for the Booktown Festival as well. Finished my visit with a relaxing stroll along the creek on the edge of town.

Came to Clunes firstly to buy a book on our way home to Queensland as I loved the idea of a 'Booktown'. Only 2 shops and a bakery/cafe open. None of them bookshops!! Do visit Clunes, it is beautiful and historic and way more to see than just the main street, but not during the week when there is no atmosphere and you might as well just look at photographs.
