Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Given the significance of the impact of the gold rush on Victoria, we expected a major monument to mark the site where gold was first found in Victoria. When we arrived, it was somewhat of a disappointment.

Esmond Park occupies a large hill overlooking the town of Clunes. It is historically important because it is here where gold was discovered for the first time in the state of Victoria in 1851.
Parts of the park are on private land for safety reasons, because the ground is pitted with the extensive remains of the Port Phillip Mine.
Clunes prides itself as being the 'First Gold Town' in Victoria. You can either drive up to Camp Street which circles the park, or there is a walking trail with interpretive signs along the way about the gold mining industry which leaves from the town centre.
The walking trail is by far the best way to learn more about the importance of mining in the area. Look out for the remains of a foundry very well hidden in the undergrowth.
At the top of the hill information panels show old photographs of the huge mining complex at its height. Don't miss the small monument marking the exact spot of the first discovery of gold. It is beside a car park on Camp St.
The mine operated from 1851-1893 and produced almost $300M worth of gold in today's prices.
