Not So Flat Stanley - Half Day Beechworth Gravel Cycling Tour

This half day guided tour is a great introduction to the gravel terrain, landscapes and food producers between Beechworth and Stanley. It’s an extended version of our self-guided Fruit and Nut day ride and begins with a punchy little climb up to the fascinating Mayday Hills Asylum before following the Old Stanley Road into Stanley village. After an optional climb up to Murmungee Lookout (worth it) we’ll stop for morning tea, then head through native bushland and pine plantations before ending the ride with a smooth tarmac descent back into town, where pizza and beer awaits.

My colleague and I paid a visit for lunch to this delightful brewery in Beechworth. We were warmly greeted at the door, by staff who could have done nothing more to have made our time with them pleasant. They all to a fault were extremely knowledgeable about there products, which were all excellent. We could have spent all afternoon and evening in the Speakeasy downstairs, trying all their wonderful beers and spirits and cordials, but alas time was against us. We managed to stock up on various brews and spirits before leaving. I heartily recommend Bilson's Brewery, and I will be returning there when next I'm anywhere near the area.

Our visit to Billson’s Brewery left is a little confused. On one hand the venue was beautiful, staff friendly and food tasty. On the other the beer was very basic and just tasted like a standard commercial lager instead of a craft beer. Then as we were sitting in leather winged back chairs in a stylish wine cellar we were served our meals on paper plates with wooden cutlery that felt like we were eating at a food truck park. The experience left us feeling quite disappointed and confused.

The cordials brought us, the gin will keep us coming back. Very generous allowing lots of tastes, of cordials (great for the kids) and alcohol as well; the gins really are superb. A new distiller has arrived since my last visit and wow have they raised the bar. It can get very crowded at the tasting bar - hopefully with the next reno that could be added? The Alfred’s is my new current favourite, but I think the George is the one I’ll come back for. The speakeasy has fabulous atmosphere but you’d better book! Great place for young and old, eating not, but recommend booking AND bringing a driver, this delightful place makes it easy to overindulge. And overspend!
