Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really interesting facts about the town during the gold rush. Great displays and photographs. Lots of bird displays. Some information on Burke & Wills but not an excessive amount. It would have been interesting to see more about their travels.

We never go to rhe Alpine region without visiting Beechworth. There is so much to do and see there. This time after enjoying a Beechworth Bakery Beesting (indescribably good!) we went to the Bourke museum. We were really impressed, especially with the way displays are explained in large text, readable so easily by anyone who is having to stand back. A relaxed, enjoyable and interesting museum, which is continuing to grow.

We really liked the self guided tour, it was only $5 entry. I learnt a few things about the history of the town which was my first time visiting, it’s worth a visit.

A small museum but it is well set out, beautifully presented and very informative. A very relaxing way to spend an hour or so discovering history belonging to Beechworth.

One of the must-see places in the old Beechworth series of historic places to visit. Especially liked the “old street” scene, and actually the real street scene outside is not too different.

With the exception of the "Dig Tree" I've been to most points of interest in the Burke & Wills saga, so it was good to see a museum celebrating his other activities. Robert O'Hara Burke may have been an ordinary explorer but was well liked & respected as a Police Superintendent in the district. The building was built in 1857 and following Burkes demise in June 1861, the residents of Beechworth decided on a memorial and the building was converted to this use. Only a small section is dedicated to Burke but tells the story well. The rest is made up of a Victorian era streetscape of the old town, gem & stone collections from the region, a large taxidermy display of birds & mammals and an evolving display on locals which is very interesting. Friendly staff & cheap entry makes this a great credit to Council! Plus it reminds us of the hard country that Europeans attempted to tame over a 160 years ago at their peril.

The main hall of the museum was built in 1857 as the home of the Beechworth Young Men's Association ... the members met regularly to hold lectures and read essays on a range of subjects. In 1858 the group was renamed the Athenaeum.

After the tragic deaths of explorers Burke and Wills the citizens of Beechworth resolved that they would build a memorial to Burke who had been Superintendent of the Police for this district from 1854-1858.

In 1863 the building was extended and further additions made in 1874. Part of the additions were the stained glass Burke Memorial Window designed by Ferguson and Erie.

I made my way to this museum after meeting a couple at the Bee School in town...they shared how much they have enjoyed the museum the previous day and how they had spent hours there.

Entrance fee is quite low... which makes it affordable to most people. The staff member was quite informative and able to answer any questions I had. The museum is fascinating and covers off a lot of history... particularly loved the shopfronts that echo another era.

Some dusty taxidermy but a very well laid out model Victorian era street front filled with the products they would have sold.

We have visited Beechworth 3 times and always not bothered visiting this museum. This time we decided to check out due to rainy weather restrictions on what we could do outside. We regret not visiting earlier bcos this is one of the best regional museums I’ve seen. It has a bit of everything from Burke and wills exhibition, war museum section and local history. But the highlight was recreated street scape that has to be seen to appreciate.

Highly recommend this amazing museum

This museum has a great collection of local historical items and information. It is all thoughtfully placed and has corresponding information. Easy to move around. The replicas of local Main Street shops are very impressive. Staff were friendly. Admission price very reasonable. Easily spend 1-2 hours there.
