Fishing in New Zealand's south island is the world series of fly fishing - BIG fish and hard to catch. Staying in a rustic farm cottage that is good for 2 people but can accommodate 4 near Mossburn and fishing every day. Beautiful scenery, so many great rivers within a short drive (anything from 3 minutes walk to 90 minutes drive) creates many options which allows for variety and adapting to the weather conditions. Knowledgable guides who can also cook so that everything is done for you and then there's the fish... huge trout and you can see a lot of them but difficult to catch which creates the challenge. The guide spots the fish but you still need excellent casting skills to avoid disappointment. And there are hedgehogs! Recommended for fly fishers and hope to go again.

Hi Chad,
You’ve absolutely nailed it—fly fishing in New Zealand really is the world series! The combination of incredible rivers, big but elusive trout, and stunning scenery makes it an unforgettable experience every time. We’re glad you appreciated the variety of waters and the flexibility to adapt to conditions—having so many options within reach is a huge part of what makes these trips special.
It was a pleasure hosting you again, and we couldn’t agree more—the challenge of spotting and fooling those fish is what keeps us all coming back. And yes, the hedgehogs are a bonus!
Looking forward to the next adventure with you.
Tight lines,
Ant & The GVFFC Team

Our family has just returned from a magical fishing experience with GVFFC. We were all new to fly fishing and so chose a one day introduction course with Geoff followed the next day by a 5 hour boat drift down the Goulburn River. My wife and I were expertly guided by Anthony and the adult children by Lachie.
I’d strongly recommend a newcomer to fly fishing to start with a few hours of instruction. Geoff was a patient knowledgeable teacher who has a passionate love of the Goulburn Valley. He’s a fascinating man who set us all up for the second day’s drift boat adventure.
Anthony and Lachie were marvellous guides. They expertly and safely piloted us down the river and found many many fish along the way. In spite of our inexperience we caught a number of fish which was a great thrill for all. Regular miscasts and line tangles were patiently dealt with and they were always friendly encouraging and positive.
While the fishing was great fun the highlight was the drift along the magnificent Goulburn River. It really is a special place.
We’d have no hesitation recommending GVFFC especially if, like our family, you’re new to the sport. It was truly a memorable couple of days.

Thanks for choosing to fish with us and for patiently negotiating the communitcation difficulties we encountered while planning your family trip. We are just so busy that we're getting almost not time to do admin work.
We thoroughly enjoyed having you guys, and to a man all our guides said the same thing. You are always welcome back in future and please don't hesitate to reach out if you need advice or assistance in future. We are here to help and it's free.
Thanks, and all the best for 2023.

My second trip with the GV team and another excellent experience. This time we did the drift boating. A five hour float down the Goulburn River while the guide expertly maneuvered (via oars) the boat to all the best water.
We saw dozens of trout and caught eighteen. Including a huge rainbow. See photo. We also saw platypus up close from the boat.
This was a terrific experience and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves fly fishing. It’s so comfortable to fish while sitting and to be able to ditch the waders and just wear sandals.
Thank you Lachy and Anthony for the great day out. We will be back in the autumn.

Thanks for the review and so glad that you enjoyed the trip as much as you did. The platypus have been a bit shy of late, but we've seen plenty in the first and last few hours of light.
Thanks again for taking a moment to write about your day with us and see you in a couple of months.
Cheers

I'm no beginner, and by no means am I an expert either, but did I catch some fish today and have a ripping time doing it? Yep, sure did. I've been guided by Ant and Lachie at GVFFC in AUS and NZ and every time I walk away happy to have learned something new and managed a fish or two (or over 15 today) even with my casting! Lachie was again a great guide and made the experience even better with his understanding of the river and some pics sent to me afterward (see below).
I've had GVFFC guide me about half a dozen times now and I'd highly recommend to anyone, of any skill or experience, to jump on a drift with Ant or Lachie. It's the best way to fish the Goulburn by a mile!!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write about your experiences with us over the years. It was good to get you back out in the boat again and the fishing has been super. Which you were able to capitalise on.
All the best and see you again soon,
Anthony

I wouldn’t recommend this trip unless you are an absolute beginner and just want to catch some fish, no matter how small. For anyone that has caught any reasonable fish I would say it is probably not worth it. Guide was pleasant on the water but when I cancelled the second day I had booked (after ensuring that they had another booking to replace mine) I believe I was subject to some vindictiveness in GVFFC not wanting to provide photos of the best fish of the day, after the guide having insisted that he would take photos and send them later when I went to get a few pics on my own phone.

Dear David,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We are sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations, and we note your dissatisfaction concerning the unfortunate loss of your photo due to accidental phone damage.
Upon your cancellation of the second booked day, your reasons appeared to be tied to personal preference, such as casting direction and fishing from a boat. These are elements largely outside our control and weren't shared before your trip. This cancellation left an unfillable opening in our schedule, but we chose not to enforce any cancellation penalty, instead choosing to focus our attention on our committed clients for the remainder of the week.
As for your assessment of the Goulburn River fishery, we respect differing views. However, it is noteworthy that the Goulburn River is recognised as one of the premier trout fisheries in the country, a status affirmed by many experienced anglers, including professionals and international guides. One day's fishing is hardly sufficient to form a comprehensive view of its quality.
It's regrettable that a single unfortunate incident with the photo has overshadowed the success of your fishing day, in which you landed more than 15 fish due to our guide Lachie's hard work. The decision to start a TripAdvisor account to leave your sole review here, after costing us a day of work, seems motivated more by spite than by a fair assessment of our service.
We believe our professionalism, along with the quality of the experience we provided despite the unexpected cancellation, stands in contrast to the one-star review left. We hope future guests consider the circumstances under which this review was given.
We wish you better experiences on your future fishing trips.
Best regards,

Take this trip off your current bucket list and start a new one - things I really MUST do, not just dream about. The GVFF team always deliver, even when the wind blows from the wrong direction (NW), the rain comes down and hatch has disappeared. The stationary 'rock' that the guide tells you is a fish, a cast beyond your usual skill, and 'lift!!' - your day is made. Start with a drift down the Goulburn, then sign on for a week in the South Island NZ. Then start budgeting, because you'll be back year after year.

I had a really enjoyable day out on the boat with Lachlan. He worked hard all day in 36 degree heat to put me on the fish and his knowledge of the river was incredible.
Having not done a huge amount of river fishing (and none on a drift boat) I was still able to have some success and catch some really nice fish. Lachlan was a great guide and I picked up some very useful tips.
The full day drift went really quickly and I would highly recommend taking this option as you just get the chance to see more of the river.
The team is very professional and I couldn’t recommend the experience enough 10/10.

Hi Rhori,
Glad you had a great time with Lachie. He knows the river inside out and is great company on the boat.
Also chuffed that you had such good fishing and were able to expand upon your knowledge and skillset.
Take care and see you again in the future.
Cheers

I've just come back from a week's fishing in NZ with the great team from GVFFC. Despite the fishing being tough due to spooky fish and low water levels, Anthony and his team bent over backwards to get us on the end of a fish and when they did, it was exhilirating!
Our guides were friendly, knowledgable, professional and above all patient, and when you combine that with stunning Southland rivers and scenery it makes for a memorable experience along with good food, comfortable accommodation and cameraderie.
I highly recommend GVFFC to anyone contemplating a New Zealnd fishing experience.

If you are at any stage of your flyfishing journey, a trip on the Goulburn River with Anthony and the team in a drift boat will immediately rate a place in your 'top five' fishing experiences. Over and above his exceptional skill as a guide (and oarsman) Anthony demonstrated his dedication to his clients on a recent trip with our party of 4, which required two guides. An unfortunate accident to one guide on the eve of our 6 day outing meant that Anthony had literally hours to find a replacement for us, which he did without causing any delay or disruption to our long-awaited fishing trip. We have dealt with GVFFC for more than a decade, and will remain clients as long as we can wield a fly rod.

Hi Rupert,
Thanks for the review and for the ongoing support of our small business. It means a lot to us that your group continue to fish with us in New Zealand each summer, as well as the occasional trip on the Goulburn. I havent sat down and done the 'math', but I think we would have crossed the 15 year mark by now.
Looking forward to seeing you in New Zealand agian in a few weeks time. Long may the ride (and the fun) continue.
Thanks again.

This was my second trip to NZ with the Goulburn Valley team and it was even better than my first one. The fish were all in top condition and my casting has improved a lot over the past 12 months meaning I was able to get out on some of the larger/windy rivers.
The guys have also made some improvements to the accommodation and the loaner polarized glasses and wading staffs were a welcome addition to the trip.
When all is said and done though it is the guides that make this trip so special. A really good bunch of guys who put in 110% to ensure that you have the best possible experience each and every day.
I really recommend you give these guys a call if you want an inexpensive NZ fly fishing trip that puts your enjoyment, success and improvement as a fly fisher at the forefront.
They also offer free orientation weekends (👍👍) in the lead-in to the trip to ensure that you’re as well prepared as possible and they work hard in the field to ensure that you’re constantly improving over the course of the week.
Thanks a lot guys. This trip is definitely great value and you really spoil us with the guiding service you provide. Long may it continue.
I’ll definitely be back with the same group in 2021.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the fabulous review of your recent NZ trip. We genuinely feel that we offer a unique service, not easily replicated by others on account of our great staff, some of whom have been working together since 1994.
Looking forward to seeing you again soon and thanks again for taking time from your busy schedule to write a review. We really appreciate it.
All the best,
Anthony
