Overview

The chapel’s plain exterior gives little hint of the riches within Religiously glorious in glorious technicolour. Never judge a chapel, or a church for that matter, by its exterior. Step inside 17th-century Rug Chapel and prepare to be wowed by its decorative flourishes. If you’re a fan of minimalism, you may want to take a deep breath before entering. Its founder, the arch-Royalist Colonel William Salesbury, created a private chapel complete with high church pretensions and a zany style to counter puritanical notions of the time. You can never have enough wood carvings or rose motifs. Colonel Salesbury was mad for them, whether it was on the altar rails, family pews, painted gallery or bench ends. A real show off in wood. It certainly grabbed the attention of Sir Edwin Lutyens. For reference, look up his Viceroy’s House in New Delhi, India.

This is run by CADWR so if you are visiting lots of their properties consider a membership.,the chapel is small with wonderful painted decorations dating back to 1600s. Tranquil gardens to sit in and maybe have a picnic before heading off.

We stumbled across this chapel and were very glad we did. Great little exhibition which we learned a lot from. Chapel itself was great, lovely artwork. Staff member passionate and well informed.

So much traffic rushes past on the A5 and A494 and has no idea what beauty lies behind the trees. The chapel looks like any other from the outside but inside is a riot of 17th century decoration in carving and paint. My favourites are...More

The rather plain outside of the chapel reveals an ornately carved and painted interior which is one of the three local chapels to survive the victorianisation of the 19 century mostly intact. Entry is reasonable and reduced for pensioners.

We visited here due to inclement weather, and the decor was somewhat over the top as essentially it was a two finger sign to the puritans. The fact that it has survived since 1637 is amazing.

A big surprise to experience a medieval chapel on the fringe of Lord Newborough's country estate, it requires imagination and time to enjoy the spiritual and artistic woodwork and to imagine the small congregation that met there

A beautiful chapel, in a peaceful location. The chapel is beautifully decorated, and well worth a visit. Although I wouldn't think young children would find it very interesting. The lady from CADW was very chatty, maybe as I don't expect she gets too many visitors...More

Sweet chapel ornately painted, reminds of a bygone era when great estates had their own chapel. It's definitely worth a visit.
