Could stand & watch the water for hours! The old bridge adds to the scenery & Killin is a thriving friendly & attractive village. We saw a pine Marten run across the road at Loch Tay.

The Falls of Dochart run through the pretty village of Killin and are surrounded by the lovely scenery of The Trossachs national Park. I would have described them as rocky rapids rather than falls, since the water is fast flowing rather than free-falling. None-the-less the effect is dramatic. One advantage of their location and relatively horizontal topography is that they are very easy to access. You can sit at a number of roadside benches, view them from Killin's attractive bridge or, if a little more adventurous, can clamber down onto the rocks, which are large and fairly flat in many areas. The falls, dramatic at all times, are particularly so after significant rain, when the white-water swells and booms impressively.

You always feel like you're getting a leg up when you see the little towns, just off the beaten path.
The Falls of Dochart are like that, a sweet, flat torrent of water pounding over rocks in the middle of a teeny Scottish village. You only need to stop for a minute to get your photo and be on your way, unless you'd like to check out the local fare.

What an amazing surprise stop we made here! One of the most scenic and wonderful little villages we passed by during our Highlands’ trip in Scotland. A must see if you are passing by for sure, especially for children!

Surprisingly low in water given all the rain but still wonderful. I wonder sometimes whether a people bridge would be useful. To avoid traffic and people mix which can be challenging.

This is somewhere I never get fed-up of stopping , as the scenery is just so movingly beautiful at all times of the year, and Killin is such a charming & picturesque Perthshire village. At the heart of it , is of course the dramatic, tumbling , rocky falls , of the river Dochart. I watched, heart-in-mouth, as kids skipped nimbly from one rock to the next in the waters. The river’s source is Ben Lui, and the water flows 21 km east from Loch Dochart, and into Loch Tay just past Killin. The romantic and historic ( 1760) arched Bridge of Dochart gives you a vantage point over the water, but be aware you share it with traffic , as it’s a village thoroughfare. There is also a smattering of appealing cafes and gift shops in this area to peruse.

We stayed in Killin for a week, attracted by the falls and the village. The falls are beautiful and accessible with large rocks and roaring water, especially after rain. We loved being in Killin and made daily trips out exploring the area. Dining options are limited in town so do plan ahead for dinner reservations if you are staying here. We enjoyed being in a small village. It does attract tourists (like us) but definitely a nice environment right in the highlands with lochs and mountains all around.

The falls are located in the village of Killin and are best viewed from the picturesque old stone bridge crossing the river; or from the rocky shoreline near the historic Falls of Dochart Inn. At the latter you can obtain a view of them with the bridge and mountains as a backdrop. The amount of rainfall around the time of your visit will impact on how spectacular (or not) these whitewater rapids look and how far you will be able to clamber over the rocks to get closer to them.

There is a free public car park near the Capercaille Restaurant at one end of the bridge.

During our recent visit in October there had been quite a lot of rainfall and it was timed nicely to see plenty of water racing down the river. The autumn colours were not as good as we have previously seen here at that time of year however that just comes down to luck.

When on the narrow bridge, which is still used by single file traffic, there is a need to be aware of vehicles as there is no pavement. Similarly be wary if you venture onto the rocks when the river is at high levels as a slip or fall may be unforgiving. The waters can be very fast flowing.

Whilst at the Falls there are quite a few places in Killin to get refreshments and alternative nearby places to see including the Killin Stone Circle and Finlarig Castle.

To see the stone circle take the path just beyond the Falls of Dochart Inn, pass between the stone pillars which mark the entrance to the Kinnell Estate and follow this trail for about 10 minutes by which time you will see the stones in a field to your right. The gated entrance to the field at the time of our visit was very muddy so it is advisable to have Wellington boots or hiking boots.

The castle is accessed along Pier Road which is on the north side of the village - coming from Kenmore on the A827 road - signposted for Killin Cemetery. It’s a 20 minute walk from the Falls or drive there in 5 minutes and park just beyond the cemetery. (Note this is the current cemetery, not an ancient one).

We had an adventure finding the stone circle and the castle without the benefit of instructions and had a tour of the area in the process!

We came after a night of rain so the falls were in full flow. An amazing sight!

Very popular with tourists when we were here.

Worth a 2 hour journey to see them.
